Good post Stradius,
I am fed up with the response to this recession / depression. And yes, in parts of this nation, I believe we are already in a depression.
100,000 more jobs lost just last week.
When the original 750 billion bail out was proposed, wall street supporters raised their hackles whenever someone called it a bailout. It was called investing in the companies, with a lucrative return to follow sometime in the future -- this was not a bailout.
Well, that was hogwash. The money is being spent. Bonuses are still lavished. The twisted reasoning now is that in these trying times, we *really* *really* need to pay top dollar to get the best executives. Bull!
The companies are supposed to work for their shareholders -- you and I. And we are all saying to stop the insane salaries. But the boards and officers ignore these words of their shareholders.
So they take the billions, and they hoard the money they don't pay out to executives, they do not do nearly enough to work to adjust the loans on the homeowners. The ultimate goal of the money was to stabilize the banking system so that they would take actions to stop foreclosures.
I'm sick of it. When this mess started 2 years ago, I didn't have that much sympathy for the people. I felt they bought too much house, with too little down and should have been aware of the risks.
I have changed my opinion. This was not too much house, this woman should have been put in loan she could afford. The term 'predatory lending' is a real thing.
Our nation is too great to have it hijacked by the money men of wall street who take our tax money, put us into debt for generations, and take the houses of people who have been preyed upon.
The government to date has not done nearly enough to fix the situation for home owners. With the layoffs feeding on themselves -- how many other homes do you see being lost this year, and nest. It's a freakin' nightmare.
Obama needs to take a stand here. This is his number one priority. He needs to put teeth into the legislation. If you take any taxpayers money to survive -- you are going to change how you do business. We told it to the automobile companies -- we can tell it to the banks.
I heard from a financial guy that Obama is considering legislation to allow some workers to take money from their retirement accounts without paying the normal 10% penalty. This is great. It's in response to the many out of work people who have had to do this to survive. Yes, you still need to pay your 30% tax or whatever on the money. That's fair. But to hit you with an extra 10% also, when you have no job is shameful in this recession/depressio n.
If this bill is passed, I'm seriously considering using the opportunity to yank my retirement out of wall street completely, since they don't listen to their investors and share holders. Pay the taxes now rather then when I retire, and put the money in a few banks at 3% interest. Then figure out how i really want to put the money to work for retirement. Buy land perhaps or a rental property.
The problem now is that most of us are stuck with wall street, because the retirement plans are constructed that way. You have to put your money in the wall street funds that your plan allows. You can't even buy government bonds if you want to save for retirement that way. They bundle up the bonds and package it as a fund, and take their cut.
If legislation is passed to give me a chance to bail on wall street and the swindling, unresponsive managers, and put my money in a local asset, I'll do that.

What the hell else are people supposed to do? The fact that these companies would rather these houses sit and rot instead of helping a family out makes me sick to my stomach.

It's the only logical way for the foreseeable future, with vacant houses galore and apartments filling up and people with no jobs needing a place too live. I for one know the future will not be peaceful, with people adjusting too the real economy.

I wish everyone would be more like that woman, her spirit is about the only one in the right place it seems in todays uncertain world. The flame of true American patriotism is only flickering today, lets ignite it and really make people remember why our fore fathers died for this land, they did it so we could be free of unjust rule. So we as a nation would be free in every way. Allowing us to live the lives so many nations before us could only dream of. In the declaration of independence it states ; We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.This was valid for any one accept slaves. We obviously abolished literal slavery and this saying was meant for any man woman or child who was an American. My point here is it seems like now more than ever we have let slavery come into the lives of Americans again by using the system of "credit". We are all slaves to the mighty dollar and it seems like people are so blinded by it today that injustices such as this example are happening everywhere. And the majority of people are letting it happen because this joke of a system is telling us, well if they haven't paid then they don't deserve their home. This is bullshit I am sick of the vermin on this planet who can sleep at night knowing they are hurting millions of fellow Americans because of the dollar, a piece of paper that literally costs nothing to make. I hope we as a people can decide enough is enough and take back our land from the slave drivers of todays world. Before it is too late.
