Letterman: censored atheist comedy 15 years later

unimatrix0
Last night, after 15 years, David Letterman showed a performance by Bill Hicks that was pulled from his show back on October 1, 1993. No one knows (or at least they aren’t saying) why the performance was pulled from the show in the first place.

Letterman invited Bill Hicks’ mother, Mary Hicks, to be on his show last night to publicly apologize for not airing the performance all those years ago. This is the clip from last nights’ show.

Interesting clip. Like Dave said, the guy was ahead of his time. And if I was into conspiracy theories I would follow the subtext and rant about network/corporate powers censoring the airways.

    • Stop thanking Letterman for showing this. The Letterman team denied to Hicks that this footage even fucking existed, they totally dicked him about on this appearance and it really meant to a lot to him, and now Letterman wants to try and capitalise on Hicks' popularity and even drag his mother into it? This is show-business at it's absolute worst, Hicks hated Letterman for selling his sorry ass to the peacock and don't you fucking forget it.

      Quotin' Hicks:
"This is what I think CBS, the producers of the Letterman show, the networks and governments fear the most - that one man free, expressing his own thoughts and point of view, might somehow inspire others to think for themselves and listen to that voice of reason inside them, and then perhaps, one by one we will awaken from this dream of lies and illusions that the world, the governments and their propaganda arm, the mainstream media, feeds us continuously over fifty-two channels, twenty-four hours a day."

I dunno why atheism has to be tied to this either, Hicks was into meditation and soul, being critical of organised religion doesn't make you an atheist.

well said- i cant stand much of organized religion and yet I am a christian. There are plenty of people who go through motions and have no heart- thats what Jesus hated most- posers.

    • 15 years ago, he was at NBC which is owned by GE one of the worlds largest weapons contractors. They probably didn't want anything to do with this comic.

    • Bill Hicks is the greatest . it's ashame he never got the recognition he deserved.

I have a great amount of respect for Letterman for attempting to rectify his wrongdoings from 15 years ago. Although I would bet any amount of money that he didn't make that decision on his own to censor the standup. I am positive that he was pressured into it.

Yeah, i can't say i agree with the title, either.

Bill Hicks wasn't about the 'forefront of atheism'...

He was about comedy and inspiring people to think for themselves. While that ties into atheism eventually, its not what's important.

Kinda misleading and disgraceful to Hicks to make this about 'an atheist being censored'.

    • Yeah, definitely way ahead of his time and this was only fifteen years ago. At least we're somewhat moving towards the right direction now. Great stand up.
