The Alberta oil sands (which, incidentally used to be commonly referred to as the “tar sands,” but were rebranded a few years back since “oil” sounds much more like money and much less like dirty, sticky goo) may, according to a recent National Geographic feature story, be the source of up to 1.7 trillion barrels of oil. Nearly 10% of the oil imported from the U.S. comes from this area, which provides jobs to thousands of people across the country and pumps billions into the economy. However, these benefits come with immense environmental costs. Just looking at a before and after photo of the area (which UN water adviser Maude Barlow likened to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Mordor) will give you a good indication of the destruction that has occurred in the past few decades.

a few years ago I drove up Vancouver Island and everywhere i went the loggers were at work cutting down the old growth forest, every few miles a sign proclaimed they were planting several new trees to replace the ones cut {they were slash pines} your story on the destruction of northern Alberta brought back disturbing memories
