Senate Rubber Stamps National Conscription Bill

Image
maasanova
The Senate last night rubber stamped a nightmare domestic draft bill that legislates mandatory national service and creates an “army” of at least 7 million civilian enforcers working at the the behest of the government, while also containing language that threatens to ban free speech and the right to protest.

Last week, we reported on the House passage of the Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act, known as the GIVE Act, which was carried with a 321-105 margin vote.

The passage of such shocking legislation with barely a whimper from political activist groups goes to show how well the corporate media has performed in camouflaging the legislation with flowery characterizations of helpful volunteerism

    • Geez, Maasa, how can you possibly be such a dolt? You are claiming that a law mandating service has been passed. Such a law does not exist. Period.

The GIVE Act, which establishes a committee to discuss whether such a bill should ever be INTRODUCED has passed both houses. The Give Act does not require ANY mandatory service from ANYONE. All the Give Act does is establish a committee.

I was about to ask you if you had any idea how many study committees there are looking into numerous different issues, but of COURSE you wouldn't know such a thing.

This exact issue has now been discussed something like a half dozen times on Current. I don't recall you being involved in any of the previous discussions. The impatience you no doubt detect on the part of some of us stems from the fact that the rest of us are five miles down the road in our understanding of this issue, and you can't seem to get past the same infantile, knee-jerk reaction that was evident in the very first Current discussion on this matter. When President Obama signs the GIve Act into law shortly, nobody will be required to do ANYTHING. Even the COMMITTEE members can choose not to show up for meetings...

    • We don't need the Federal govt decreeing mandatory volunteerism. Isn't than an oxymoron anyway? If it is mandatory you aren't volunteering. Many schools already provide service learning on a local level where nothing else is required. I myself even believe this could be used as a precursor down the road to a military conscription since it is on the federal level. Let local school boards decide their own individual policies regarding such volunteerism then. I am tired of big brother telling us what to do and how to live. It is no better than churches pushing their faux morality down our throats.

    • I went to 2 schools where community service was mandatory. It was great (though I wasn't a huge fan of the first school itself). I'm having trouble seeing the downside to a nation that is better prepared for disasters, can rely more on their communities during emergencies and is bettering society through active service. As a Red Cross instructor I'd like to see as many people as possible knowledgeable how to help their fellow man however they can.

    • I don't see how 100 hours of community service is taking away liberty. Americans are such apathetic whiny children.

Also, Congress makes the laws so when you quote "without due process of law" your point is null and as long as you have the Judaical branches to appeal to there is due process.

    • Interesting. I have one Current member telling me that the legislation doesn't exist and another Current member telling me that conscription/mandatory servitude is in fact American. I wonder which one I shall believe.

      US Constitution, 5th Amendment:

“No person shall be … deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.”

Conscription deprives a person of liberty without due process of law. This is clearly prohibited by the 5th amendment. Conscription is an involuntary taking of a person’s labor—which is a form of property—without just compensation as provided by the eminent domain provisions of the 5th amendment.

Compulsory government service is incompatible with individual liberty.

    • Another comedy zinger from maasanova? Another switch too! True to form!

"We don't need our youth to be required to do anything. It's not American."

      WOW! The Zonker-In-Chief has spoken!

      How's that for Slacker Permissiveness!

Shouldn't our youth be required to learn important stuff?

You know, bad things like Math, language skills, reasoning, Science, and how to do things better than people who don't know how to do anything? (We have a lot of them in politics already - and you want more of them?)

Is learning all that out too?

My God, maasanova, you're coming across like some lobotomized hippie!

No wonder a law wonk Professor/President who had the jam to graduate with top honors and teach at Harvard makes you feel insecure!

What schemes could he be up to! How would you know?

      You have topped all expectations!

      Learning - is UNAMERICAN!
      Being smart - is UNAMERICAN
      Helping others - is UNAMERICAN!
Advancing with Effort - is UNAMERICAN!

      Got anything left for us?

    • I didnt see where it said it only applied to grade schoolers. When I posted this story 2 months ago or more most of you said the bill would never pass at all. Now that it has some of you still think it only applies to students. Do you think on hitlers first day in office he fired up the gas chambers, or do you think they slowly came about after a year or 2 or longer. Just because it may or may not only apply to "students" today doesn't mean it wont apply to ALL tomorrow. Go on keep your head in the hole Averymoore, the GOV loves the blind by choice such as yourself.

What will it take to wake people up. I think some will be on the prison cars headed to their work camps and still not believe what is happening. There will be some who are actually doing the work already and still not believe. God you people are fools some of yous. The only other thing it could be is that some of you are paid by the DNC to try to put out propaganda or control the truth that does get out.

Wow, you REALLY like to find ways of including "sheeple" into your posts. Combining "sheep" and "people" is SO clever...

Yet you don't mind lying on virtually every post, because you know quite well that none of your positions or opinions could stand up under an analysis of the underlying facts.

You posted on this thread based entirely on the title without reading a single word of the underlying bill. Your whole life is one big scam. How can you possibly be so shallow that you don't see how pathetic that is?

When an ultra-conservative is willing to put in the work to base his or her position on the facts -- without twisting, torturing or misrepresenting them -- their opinions are worthy of consideration. Reasoned debate from all sides of an issue sharpens the policies that result. To date, however, you have not contributed a single post worthy of serious consideration, including this bizarre "30 pieces of silver" post. YOU are the one selling out the American people -- by lying to them and by trying to make them afraid without justification or provocation. In other words, you are Bush's "mini me." Congratulations.

    • maasanova?

We understand that no one exceeds your swift avoidance of anything which successfully criticizes your previous efforts. That's just typical of GOPer gofer tactics. When proved wrong - foment another "issue." Bait, switch, bait. And switch.

      But can you actually read?

The document you cite clearly states that people asked to provide limited service - are STUDENTS.

Adolescents in "middle school", "high school" and "college." Why is that ambiguous to you?.

And this threatens YOU? Or me? HOW?

Are you still in grade school?

Is that why you offer these lame excuses for argument?

      Got any more "evidence"?

      I'll bet you do.

    • Hell, even the Continental Army during the American Revolution was voluntary, and if I remember history correctly they did OK. I just hope all those who are defending this are the first to sign up should this actually prove to be a subtle precursor to a military service conscription.

    • We don't need a law that requires mandatory service for anyone.

If you think we NEED a mandatory service bill, which has passed by the way, why don't you tell us why.

    • maasanova,

So you don't think National Security is important to Americans? During the onset of the worst Depression in 70 years?

In your prized clip all that President Obama says is - 'we 've got to have it.'

What does domestic national security mean? You left that part out in your carefully meaningless presentation of Evidence.

Worse you didn't investigate any further.

You offer neither proof, nor theory.. Because, in fact, you have neither?

What you wish us to see absolutely confirms nothing - except the bias already in your head.

For so many GOPer gofers the greatest shock requires taking the rejection of their platitudes and faux-patrotic posturing like an adult. The way to resolve this is simple. When you sit down to write something, especially something ludicrous and drama-queen worthy, like "The Sky Is Falling! Obama is after us! Democracy is in Dire Peril" think about it first. Reconsider.

Because you say something is true is insufficient. Nothing is true merely because you say so.

Nor are statements true because FOX says so, or CNBC, CNN, ABC\CBS\\NBC or even Talk Radio, especially when the same herd of GOPer gofers trot out the same pathetic crap year after year.

It looks like all that you have accomplished here, is express two opinions.

One concerns who you think spouts the propaganda issues you want used to get the GOP back to power.

The other opinion, of which you obviously are unaware, is that the same low ball standards they use to undermine a new President - for ratings and other editorial considerations – is good enough for you.

Your arguments accomplish no more than to smear the honesty and integrity of America's President.

When the left banged away at Bush's parade of pinheaded idiocies "humans and fish can live together!" and so on, no doubt you thought - They can't do that to a President!

Think about it and tell us - why should you?

    • maasanova,

Had all this begun during the Bush Administration and people declared "Beware! They mean to enslave us! It is the end of freedom and democracy!" what would you have called it? Paranoia? A conspiracy theory?

      Bad news, sport.

FEMA authorized Haliburton to build a slew of concentration camps across the continent DURING the Bush administration. They wouldn't say why. The Patriot Act authorized the surveillance and incarceration of everyone Mr. Bush authorized himself to suspend the Constitution, shut down Congress, and rule autocratically as long as he saw fit.

      What happened next?

      Zip.

But because you don't like the Dem in the White House, a guy with no record whatsoever of even inklings of authoritarianism; a guy heavily criticized for being willing to talk to any opponent and compromise to establish peace and stability - you think that means he's way too dangerous and wants to control everything, starting with YOU?

Your ideological fantasy has been interrupted.

This is a very rough time for you. Do not panic. Do not run around screaming rape because your guys lost.

Do not adjust your set. Throw out your set. You have been fed ideological narcotics for 8 years of Chinese-styled thought reform. Without those daily palliatives you think the end is near and people who were nowhere near dangerous now are out to get you.

      Throw out your set..

Start with remembering one more significant variable - nothing can get through the Senate without Republican senatorial consent.

    • Thanks AveryMoore for letting us know it's just a conspiracy theory that Congress just passed a national conscription bill. Now I don't have to worry about it since it's just a conspiracy theory.

      Enjoy your "change"!

Averys head is stuffed so far up his ass. he has to clean his belly button to see whats going on. and its obvious he hasn't cleaned it in many years now. I believe some of these people will be in the prison rail cars, headed off to the work camps, and still think the GOV is sending them on an all expense paid vacation.

Maasanova, were your IQ not smaller than your microscopic manhood, you probably could have actually READ the bill and discovered what it really says. You are without a doubt the most boldfaced liar I have ever seen on Current. Were it mine to give, you would win an equally microscopic trophy that you could take back under your rock and exhibit to your friends.

They do not fear God... let's hope they fear the wrath of America, should they try something ignorant...

Or maybe a new war front may be opened to address the unrest?
