Mass weighs pros and cons of legal marijuana

Two Massachusetts legislators have introduced a bill that would make the sale of marijuana by licensed distributors legal in the state.

House Bill 2929 and Senate Bill 1801, introduced in the statehouse March 23, was sponsored by Amherst Rep. Ellen Story, Northampton state Sen. Stan Rosenberg and petitioned for by Northampton attorney Richard Evans. The bills seek to tax and regulate the cannabis industry, stating that “previous efforts have not succeeded in eliminating or curtailing marijuana use and abuse.”

    • It is the fundamental rights upon which this nation was created, was to have an open and free market or "laissez faire" to an extent where government does not control every aspect of our lives and thus fall victim to absolute despotism.

    • To those who choose to toke, we're half way there with our recent decriminalization in Mass. This is the next logical step for Beacon Hill to take, as they have with alcohol, cigarettes & gambling. Controlling & dispensing MJ will create jobs & revenue to finally offset the high cost of "Reefer Madness" propaganda drug enforcement while reducing the criminal element involved in trafficking.

On the contrary, the Mass State Lottery became so lucrative & successful that many other states adopted its format for both scratch tickets & nightly drawings. Although I seldom play, I do know it generates one of the largest revenue streams for the state rivaling our sales tax collections.

Horse racing has been legal for years, generating lucrative revenues as well. But on the same Nov ballot, the voters outlawed dog racing. After adding Keno to clubs, bars & restaurants a few years ago, this has also become very popular & lucrative. It’s only a matter of time until they add slots & video poker, unless it's already happened, while the debate for full-fledged casinos rages on because gambling is so popular here.

    • Instead of passing something like the Home Owners and Bank protection ACT, these immoral idiots are trying to pass measures that would make it easier for future generations to cause bodily harm and stupefy themselves. You potheads maybe a lost cause but don't drag down future generations with you.

      The Modern Day Messiah

The pain of pasts still left undone
      The tyranny of guilt
      A deep regret inside someone
With these, that cross is built.

A cross is but to crucify,
      To wash away ones sins.
But some will give in to a lie
that the martyr is not them.

They attempt to pay all guilty costs
And for their young, their sin is meant
To try and fix all that they’ve lost
      but on the innocent.

And those who haven’t done this wrong,
      who haven’t missed this time
are forced to carry on so long
      their parent’s guilty mind

For not of cause and not of will
      and nothing they would choose
      Regrets…mistakes…will take their fill
      In that growing child’s views

      And mother, father’s hope remains
and moves their lives past here
for baby now has all their pain
      and suffers all their fears.

“You best not mess up what you’ve got
      don’t repeat my mistakes
I’ll make you learn all that I’ve taught
      but couldn’t seem to take”
“Pay no mind, sweet ugly child
      to my hypocrisies
For you will do just as I’m told
and I’ll take what you please.”

“And through your life I will be free
and make up for the lost
but if you mess this up for me,
YOU’LL have to pay the cost.”

“So go make mommy, daddy proud.
      be pretty, smart and clean
      Embarrassment within a crowd,
      Will make mommy, daddy mean.”

      “Follow mommy, daddy’s faith
      and never curse or swear
      Goddamn you little foul ingrate!
You took my dope from here!”

And parent was the name of God
on the the lips of every child
But now the boogie man is law
      and young hope is defiled.

For them, survival’s all that’s left
when wrought with all these trials
the issues and the sins now kept
      by these modern day messiahs.

I think you have the wrong idea. I take it you never heard of the HBPA. I'll leave a link so you can look it over. Then I'll leave you to your pothead threads.

P.S I have a legitimate question. If I smoked pot and quit, does that make me a hypocrite? And if it does, am I wrong to be against using pot to get high?

I know there are benefits in using hemp for industry. But I doubt that is the reason most people want so badly for weed to become legal.

"Ok,"Artist", I'm the ignorant one? Yeah, and Picasso with his doodles is now considered an artist."

Er, what does Picasso have to do with this? But yes, he is considered an artist...good job, you get a golden star!

If obviously have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to various aspects of marijuana use. Do some research before you start talking about "immoral idiots" and "lost causes"! Having smoked pot in your lifetime does not mean that you are informed on this issue; that is clearly not the case!

Whether or not pot is or is not unhealthy is beside the point. All people have the right to choose what they will do with their time, their bodies and their property and no law however well meaning it's intentions, is justified in denying anyone these basic rights.

Without the concept of equality of Rights and of Justice, we are little more than trained monkeys; we are cavemen.

I would expect some one who claims to revere American Patriots to understand this better than most.

    • Bout time some smart people in the Senate start to think of "radical new ideas." We've been saying these things for years, prohibition doesn't work, it only applies more interest to the drug. I'm only 18, I know this will never pass, but at least Senate is finally paying some attention to the things people have been saying for decades...
