STIMULUS BENEFITS AND BEWILDERMENT

BOSTON – Some town leaders say the federal stimulus package, with its promise of creating jobs, is neglecting to invest in the cornerstones of community life, from new city halls to recreation centers.

There's some money to hire police officers, but no money to rebuild the stations they work in. The opposite's true for firefighters. No money to hire more, but at least some funding to improve firehouses.

Money for wind turbines? Yes. New traffic signs? Yes. Hybrid car discounts? Yes.

Money for new libraries? No. New town halls? No. Swimming pools? No. School athletic stadiums? No.

While there may be some money to plunk solar panels on that aging municipal building, there's no money set aside to replace it.

"This is trickle-down stimulus," said Joseph Fernandes, town administrator in Plainville, Mass., a town of about 8,000 south of Boston. Fernandes was hoping for help building a new, $12.5 million fire, police and town hall complex, which he said could put people to work as quickly as some of the highway projects receiving stimulus dollars.

    • We try to appease the terrorists and call the US soldiers who fought against them "potential terrorists", along with pro life demonstrators. Our country is currently run by those who truly hate our country, who despise its Christian foundation. Yes, CHRISTIAN foundation, not atheist or humanist foundations, despite all that those revisionist history nuts claim.....See just how much longer this will go on before the people who drank the KoolAde regurgitate it, and see the error of their ways....

    • Go figure, she is doing television and not movies. I understand now why they were calling her a D-list actress. The only television I watch these days is Fox News and Current, and even then maybe a couple times a week.

    • No apologies needed Barbara3D, we can't get enough from that Obama. As far as all this rhetoric coming from JaNo (DHS) and Garafalo, regarding their newly defined terms for racism and terrorism, please allow them to continue because everyone know JaNo will end up losing her job and what has Jeanine G. done lately, other than the small role she had on Romi and Michelle's High School Reunion.

    • Not trying to high-jack your thread Akamail but since we were talking about this NEW Head of Homeland Security (I think she is a politically correct appt).

This document was released erroneously with some embarrasment by her but she "stands behind it" even going so far as to say she believes many of the soldiers coming home should be considered as 'terrorists" along with the anti obortion clinic people, and anti-gun control persons.

If you go to the link, there is a pdf file of her actual letter.

Oh, I see. We are not at war with foreign terrorists any more but now are afraid of our own soldiers, NRA, and anti abortion people. We apologized to Mexico for creating the Mexican Cartel by sending them arms and a market for the drugs.

It is very clear to me that Obama sided with his wife when she made her faux pau "Until now, I have never had a reason to be proud of my country".

      God help us.

    • Why not have the individual townships assess what they need rather than direct where it goes...... this is one of the main issues of federal control over local matters. They cannot blanket fund something like this. Things are way too circumstantial to deal with this on a federal level.... They should just ask the towns to figure out what they need and request the funds, if theres a discrepancy they can send someone out to check it......

or at least thats what makes sense to me.......

Nope, doesn't work that way. Like the school and the green roof, the school's falling down but can't use the money to fix it BUT CAN put an expensive green roof on top!
Can only use the money for politically correct stuff they put in the bill. Thus the more than 1,100 pages in it.

    • Not to offend any race of people but this whole thing is going to look like a "chinese Fire-drill" I guess with all the filthy name calling on this site just thrown out there like prepositions, maybe no one will be offended as it is "not politically correct.

If we loved our government and each other as much as we worship at the throne of Political correctness..we would be ok,

It could be interesting since many states say they will refuse any money and the government says they Have to take it!

I saw a film clip about Hillary (I think she was relating this to her losing capaign)...she is at the podium yelling,"We are Americans, we have every right to stand up and voice our opinions". Well this morning, all thats on TV is the name calling by the left towards the ones that were having a peaceful assembly. Some so called celebrity (Jeanine Carofol?) said all the Tea Party people were stupid red-necks that don't even know what the tea party meant in its history and then she went on to label them as scumbags. The World must be laughing so hard at us because even the journalist from CNN was asking them if they were there to incite a riot?? I guess she missed the History lesson herself about freedom of speech. If its ok for the KKK, and white supremist groups to march, what is so bad about a little 'tea party"

Now Obama says that the USA is to blame for the ??Mexican drug Wars??? Has he lost his mind?

I do not see a traditional government working on a daily basis. Such as has it been for over 200 years, I see Obama jumping on planes almost daily. I guess going to Mexico was a way to get out of the heat in DC.

And you know, those billions will not have any accounting for. He should at least give the money to an accountant that will make sure every dollar is used for whatever purpose...stinky swine, studies of bees.Oh and I wish ALL of them would actually read the policies that are set forth!
(sorry AKA but I just got up, could not sleep due to all this stress) Now there are saying another new person Obama is hiring took funds out and made the money 'hers' for herself! Is everyone he has a chicago politician!?

I've seen Jan Garofola talk many times. She's an actress and a loud ill informed liberal. She looks down on everyone that does not share her opinion.

She's the cheap version of 'lizard head' Bill Clinton's campaign advisor, I can never remember his name... he's married to Mary Matlin one of George Bush Sr.'s advisors.

Easy to scream an opinion very loudly, with very little to back it up. and when you bring this up they just scream your part of the right wing conspiracy.

Diesel; you must mean James Carvel? aka 'lizard head'. I bet talk around the dinner table is a little strained. She is down to earth and seems nice. James...NOT so much. I think the name I was trying to think of was the Homeland Security Executive: Jan Napolitonio.(sp)

Yes, that's him. I always see his pointed head, evil eyes and the sh*t-eaten grin of his and think what redeeming qualities does she see in him. Carvel, like the NY ice cream place. I just can't associate him with ice cream.
And Nepolitonio, I watched that clip...boy, what political double speak....Do these people ever, for a moment listen to what they have written in front of them to read before they actually do read it?
I couldn't understand why Obama picked her, with all her states border problems she can't handle to handle the whole country's ineptly?

Well I hope that most of the money does trickle down to the average worker. People are hurting and we need jobs created now. The only way to do this is to give incentives to companies to make those kinds of investments by shifting and giving tax cuts to those that are going to be following your policy that you have established.

I work for a developer and I know that every company and trade is hurting. About the only thing getting built right now is medical facilities and hospitals. Home building and custom office buildings are down, because business in down all around. Lots of small businesses are barely staying afloat.

We need the stimulus of money to go out for contracts that every contractor and developer can access.

Jubal: Right. lets create more "Product" to trinkle down and mingle with all the "Product" that no one has the money to buy in the first place.

Just like my grandmother said, during the Great Depression- "There was plenty of fine things to be bought at lowest prices ever but no one would chance letting go of a dollar for fear that would not afford "necessities" only.

@ Barabar3D Not sure I get your sarcasm and what you really mean. What are you proposing we should do? How would you go about stimulating the economy so that the working middle class can have a chance to move up the economic ladder?
