No—extended bouts of sleeplessness can cause an array of physical symptoms and might eventually kill you. The effects begin within the first 24 hours of sleep deprivation. First, the body undergoes subtle hormonal changes—cortisol and TSH levels increase, leading to a rise in blood pressure. A day or two later, it stops metabolizing glucose properly, creating carbohydrate cravings. (This phenomenon may have gone unnoticed among the detainees, who were already on a calorie-restricted diet.) A person's body temperature will also drop, and his or her immune response becomes somewhat suppressed. All of these physiological changes are reversible, though—take a nap, and you'll be on the road back to normal.

Amanda Schaffer discussed why people sleep. William Saletan reported on the military's sleep-reduction program. David Plotz tried a drug for the chronically sleep-deprived. Seth Stevenson tested over-the-counter sleep aids.
It's possible that given enough time, sleep deprivation can kill you. While no human being is known to have died from staying awake, animal research strongly suggests it could happen. In the 1980s, a University of Chicago researcher named Allan Rechtschaffen conducted a series of groundbreaking experiments on rats. After 32 days of total sleep deprivation, all the rats were dead. Curiously, researchers still do not agree on the cause of death. It's possible that the rats' body temperature dropped so much that they succumbed to hypothermia. Another theory posits that the rats' immune systems became so depressed that bacteria normally sequestered in their intestines spread throughout their bodies—though Rechtschaffen counters that his rats perished even when they were administered antibiotics. A third explanation points to some evidence of brain damage among the sleep-deprived rats. It's also possible that extreme levels of stress contributed to the rats' demise.

erm...i had a buddy in college who stayed up for 3 or 4 days straight (can't remember which now). he was incredibly spastic but he didn't suffer any long term effects (i mean...he was already kind of a dumb ass). the article mentions there's no reported deaths from sleep deprivation on record so ya'know...science and all that.
kind of beside the point. torture is torture. and...it could be that the other acts of torture in conjunction with the sleep deprivation could kill you.

Your bud was young, healthy and had no history of heart disease. If someone has a heart problem, known or unknown, they can die or have a serious heart attack.
When I was in college a girl I knew stayed up 5 days and took lots of coffee and I suspect other things to stay up, and she became totally nuts and had hallucinations and ended up in the infirmary. She returned to normal after sleeping sufficiently. But she was seeing things and hearing things.
As you said, that combined with other things could really be tortue. And if she had been ill from high BP or heart disease, she could have died. - 3 years ago

yes, carmalite is at it again. By the way, yes, sleep deprivation can kill you. Sometime, I believe it was WWII, a ship's captain was awake for, I believe 4 straight days. Apparently he thought his attention to the task was so vital he sacrificed his sleep. Well. in the pilothouse he just keeled over- either that, or he collapsed on his bed, and he never woke up....I can't remember the exact details.....

Old Uncle's whole act is that he is ultra insanely religous, supports torture, is a regualr Fox news fan, and believes every single thing on Fox. Also all those little RNC ditto emails he receives are the bible to him.
Uncle, try staying awake for 4 days. lol My hubby's doctor told him that people who are sleep deprived have a statistically higher rate of heart attacks. And he is a cardiologist. But you are so much more intelligent than a board certified doctor who is famous in his field. Right?
Uncle, really stay away for 4 days. It might improve the board here. Also try getting waterboarded, and I imagine you will be saying that you are responsible for
watergate and every crime that comes to your mind. - 3 years ago

Huh? The captain of which I speak probably keeled over from a heart attack because of lack of sleep. So I am in total agreement with your ol' man's cardiologist, as he only would verify what I read. (the story I mention came from a book or magazine, I believe.) I am not "ultra insanely religious", watch Fox News on occasion, but do not watch it regularly, and have never gotten anything from the RNC except a "potrait" of George W. with a request for money. (And I only got that because I'm a member of the NRA)(Naturally, in the trash it went.) They send me no emails, never have, and don't know I exist. Besides, I'm really a libertarian cleverly disguised as a republican. I am here to piss off the heathens, and shake them out of their brainwashed, Obama worshiping complacency- to make them think! If you read some of my other posts, I said that waterboarding has been proven to be completely useless, as the victim will say anything to get out of it- usually just making things up. Incidentally, I am much more "tolerant" than you give me credit for! However, if you wish, I will steer clear of your posts, to give you a little "vacation" from my wonderful wit and compassionate conservatism! :)

USWGO -- how exactly does the PRESIDENT pass a bill? He doesn't even get to VOTE on bills. That is Congress' job. And what do you mean by "your" draft bill? Are you a member of Congress? I assume so, since private citizens are not allowed to sponsor legislation...

If they can torture foreigners, they can torture American citizens. That is why people need to be accountable for this.
