Senator praised staff last week, saying their positions were ‘in harmony’ with GOP

The chief Republican counsel for the Senate Judiciary Committee penned a blog post last month linking same sex marriage to pedophilia — and subsequently yanked it when it drew attention.

William Smith, who was installed as Judiciary chief counsel last week by Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL, above right), wrote a seething blog post last month responding to a speech advocating that the party embrace same sex marriage.

Smith was responding to a speech given by a McCain consultant and former Bush aide Steve Schmidt to the Log Cabin Republicans, a gay Republican lobbying group. In his post, Smith linked same sex marriage to child rape, bestiality and pedophilia.

“I wonder if next week Schmidt will take his close minded stump speech to a NAMBLA meeting,” Smith quipped on Apr. 20. “For those unfamiliar with NAMBLA, the acronym is for North American Man Boy Love Association.”

    • Artemis6,

It is considered acceptable because the far-right, for now, has captured political control of the Republican party. They are the ones in charge.

Just look at what has happened to moderate Republican Senators. John Warner of Virginia has retired, and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania has joined the Democrats. Several others have lost elections. That leaves John McCain of Arizona, and Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine. Most of the rest of the Republican Senators are now hardcore conservatives. The same holds true for the House.

When a party swings to the extreme, it is easy for it to accept extreme views. That is what is happening here.

    • Funny thing is this: Gay men who are out and proud pose no threat whatsoever to society. Gay men who are in such self-loathing denial that they cannot come out to themselves or their loved ones because homosexuality goes against their "religion" or "politics," are the ones who end up
      a) molesting young boys (ie - many anti-gay priests),
      b) procuring drugs and sexual favors from male prostitutes (ie - Evangelical leader and major homophobe Ted Haggard), or
      c) soliciting sex from men in public restrooms at airports (Republican Senator and major homophobe Larry Craig).

    • God save us from the gays. Narco states and Islamic extremists pale in the face of thin, neat men in their 30's who live alone.

    • I agree with Fallen Morgan, libertarian Republicans should team up with the Libertarian and Constitution parties and replace the Republicans as a major part, true conservatism isn't dead!

    • It's interesting how people in power seem to be of less intellectual fortitude, or at least moral fortitude, than most of the people I know around my age group... early 20's.

This is a frightening level of narrow-minded stupidity.
