Book Review: Schools of Democracy by Clayton Sinyai

On the surface, Schools of Democracy seems to be a historical journey through the American labor movement of the Post-Civil War era. Instead, Clayton Sinyai has managed to incorporate civil rights and the pursuit of civic virtue as the underlying themes of Schools of Democracy. The labor movement is merely a vehicle used to drive such themes into the reader’s mind. And Sinyai’s portrayal of the labor movement and labor unions is on par with the beliefs of the AFL’s founder, Samuel Gompers, and French thinker, Alexis de Tocqueville: a man’s work should help to develop a man’s mental capabilities rather than hinder them.
