Obama Tactic forces health care bill regardless of normal senate procedures.

WASHINGTON — At the prodding of the White House, Democratic Congressional leaders have agreed to pursue a plan that would protect major health care legislation from Republican opposition by shielding it from last-minute Senate filibusters i.e. discussion.

The aggressive approach reflects the big political claim that President Obama is staking on health care, and with it his willingness to face Republican wrath in order to guarantee that the Democrats, with their substantial majority in the Senate, could not be thwarted by minority tactics.

While some Democratic senators were reluctant to embrace the arrangement, Mr. Obama made clear at a White House session on Thursday afternoon that he favored it, people with knowledge of the session said.

At the White House meeting this week, Mr. Obama told senators from both parties that he did not want a health care overhaul to fail if it came up a vote shy of the 60 needed to break filibusters, the people with knowledge of the session said.

Do you think this is how our government SHOULD WORK??

    • arcticspirit,
I see where you're coming from on the issue of the president saying he wants the bill to pass.
All presidents have made strong requests when it comes to pet projects.
Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan, all have done what Obama is doing. It is nothing new.
As to health care, I know 2 people who died from lack of care because no money, no insurance. There was no government help available.
I know several people that have went without because of costs.
It is time for somehting to happen regarding health care, and at least this is a beginning.

    • Jubal, If you knew anything about me, you would understand that I don't waste my precious time doing political pandering.

I happen to be disabled and I don't want my medical rights taken way from me in a way to get somewhat quick access to medical care. (depends on the doctors schedules and getting referrals)

I want to get well, and this propaganda the president is singing about isn't gonna cut it. If fact is frightening.

    • My experience with government healthcare....

i grew up with the government running the hospitals and dentists. This would be the US government. not the Japanese government.

Do you know that I had my wisdom teeth taken out and they did not put me "under" like they do in the civilian sector... they just used Novocaine and used more when I started spazzing out in the seat as the stuff was wearing off. Of course recovery was a bitch.

That's just one way shortcuts are taken. And I was given as little Novocaine as possible and none of that stuff that makes your mouth numb before. No wonder I'm scared of dentists.

So if you want your government run healthcare so bad I hope you know what you are getting.

    • So you agree that Obama should threaten and force it's bill thru congress. No president had demanded such treatment. Why should Obama? He did it with the stimulus and many of us aren't happy about the after math.

Why not let it go thru normal house and senate procedure? Does that scare him too much? Evidently the answer is yes. Instead senators are threatened by OBAMA to give a 60 vote so there will be no changes.

When you loose your health care rights due to law, and cant have the surgery you need or the advanced testing that you should have because the wait list is years long, and meanwhile your health deteriorates to the point to where the surgery that would have helped 3 years before is obsolete now... is par for the course. I have a friend in Canada that died before she could get breast cancer surgery.

arctic spirit stop scaring people with false information. A public option would be just an extension of the existing medicare program. I have medicare and so does my father, and I have never seen nor heard of anyone being told to wait to have a procedure or denied coverage because they had cancer. Medicare you can go to any doctor you want.

the only difference between medicare and private insurance is that medicare tell the provider how much they get to charge medicare and how much they can charge the patient.

All the other fearmongering ideas are simply not true, they are meant to scare people from the public option.

    • The gov't should work for the interests of its people. When 72% say they want to have another option, the democracy part of our gov't should kick into gear and the representatives should vote the will of the people instead of the will of the industry throwing millions of dollars in their face. If this reform does not include a public option, we will have even more proof that we live in a Plutocracy rather than a Democracy.

But you still think that they should break senate and house rules to pass this, instead of letting it take it's due course? If you ask me that is bypassing one branch of the American government and is NOT OK.

Here by having presidential decree to vote a certain way, it effectively eliminates the legislative branch of the government.. It eliminates one branch of checks and balances that has to work properly for it to work at all. I don't know about you but I want these checks and balances that the founding fathers put into play to continue to work. It is FOR OUR GOOD.

For President Obama to demand this or that, force votes, then that is unconstitutional.
I hope someone calls him on it.

    • Our current health care system generates an enormous amount of overhead. Every time we go to the doctor, a claim must be submitted, an approval department has to go over the claim, checks have to be mailed, patients are sent co-pay bills, and so on. The thing that's especially wasteful is that each doctor's office usually maintains their own record-keeping system. A universal healthcare plan would allow us to build one centralized system. There would be no need for maintaining insurance information or wasting time submitting claims. The work savings in the banking and postal areas alone would be worth billions every year.

There will not be enough doctors to go around. They will be working for peanuts. so the quality doctors will leave. or be only in private practice. so what is left, people that barely made it out of med school even in other countries, older doctors do not stay current with the latest trends in medicine, and anyone else that is a start up and has not gotten a private practice together yet, if they are any good.

    • Businesses and individuals that choose to keep their health plans still must pay a much higher amount. Remember, businesses only have a certain amount of money they can spend on labor. If they must spend more on health insurance premiums, they will have less money to spend on raises, new hires, investment, and so on. Individuals who must pay more for premiums have less money to spend on rent, food, and consumer goods; in other words, less money is pumped back into the economy. Thus, health care prevents the country from making a robust economic recovery. A simpler government-controlled system that reduces costs would go a long way in helping that recovery.

That would be cool if it worked like that.

But what about the disabled and the seriously ill that need many medical procedures, where do you think Obama run health care will leave us?

    • Since health care premiums continue to grow at several times the rate of inflation, many businesses are simply choosing to not offer a health plan, or if they do, to pass on more of the cost to employees. Employees facing higher costs themselves are often choosing to go without health coverage. No health insurance doesn't necessarily mean no health care since there are many clinics and services that are free to indigent individuals. However, any costs not covered by insurance must be absorbed by all the rest of us, which means even higher premiums.

This isn't really discussing if we will have a healthcare deal but the process they are using to try to pass something fast, probably unread by the people that are voting on it and by demand, excuse me DIRECT DEMAND of OBAMA.

It's the fact that he is removing as much of the legislative process from the government as he can to as much as possible nullify the system of checks and balances, as well as make sure that people are not informed of the complete bill before it is passed, it is going to be where we learn what happened after like the stimulus where legislators had no idea what they were voting on.

Railroading something of this importance thru congress is not good for anyone, not democrats or republicans. It needs to be well debated and very much thought about.... by everyone.

Not some clandestine plan put into action like this. It's negating the legislative branch 1/3 of the government... and THAT'S NOT COOL.

What does this sound like to you? Take out the presidential name if you need to, to be objective... this is WRONG.

    • My original graphic that I found was a cartoon that said something about the health care bill being about as great as the stimulus bill... was removed from the internet. CENSORSHIP.

      PRAVDA.

The second image I used, was also removed from the internet... Also this story keeps getting buried on current.com. I'm sorry Mr. Gore if it's against your side, but truth is truth and it should be told.
