Anger is brewing in Salford, Greater Manchester after an independent grass-roots magazine, the "Salford Star" was denied community funding from the local council.
Labour-run Salford City Council has denied funding to the independent publication which has caused outrage amongst local residents and the community.
The publication has vigorously dismissed the city council's claims that it is overlty political and criticise the local authority too much. The editor of the Salford Star has made it clear they are "Totally independent, is not aligned to any political party, and never tells anyone how to vote."
Local community groups including the Vertical Villages residents association, trade unions and even Salford Youth Council along with independent councillors have expressed their anger on the matter.
Independent councillor for Swinton South, Joe O'Neill stated "the Star in my view acts as a policeman for Local Government and is sadly missed for it’s content".
Rachel Cavendish and David Henry Co-chairs of Salford Youth Council told current: "This decision is outrageous, it's goes against everything the community committees are meant to work towards - we need the Salford star to be the voice for the people".
