American Academy of Pediatrics

Comparing the heavily exposed and the non-exposed infants, the Brazelton clusters on day 30, showed that the offspring of heavy-marijuana using mothers had significantly higher scores on:

- orientation

- autonomic stability

- reflexes

- habituation to auditory and tactile stimuli, and to animate auditory stimuli

- higher degree of alertness

- capacity for consolability

- less irritability

- had fewer startles and tremors

- better physiological stability at one month

- required less examiner facilitation to reach an organized state

- more socially responsive

- the quality of their alertness was higher

- their motor and autonomic systems were more robust

- they had better self-regulation

- they were more rewarding for caregivers than the neonates of non-using mothers at one month of age

From the Schools of Nursing, Education and Public Health, the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Received for publication Sep. 21, 1992; accepted June 30, 1993.

    • I dunno I used to be all about saying Marijuana was harmless for pregnant mothers, while I never openly advised it to ANYONE though.

But my friends sister who smoked a lot of weed while pregnant with her current child AND that same friend's cousin and his wife did the same. Both of the children born of these mothers are ...very ...strange acting children.

Both of the children act like a child with Asperger's syndrome or autism or something. They act kind of 'severely mentally retarded' to say the least, in my estimation. So I wouldn't risk it moms out there!!!!

Hell from my experience I might even draw a link between marijuana use during pregnancy and the rise of Autism in this country. Regardless of what most people think more people use marijuana and drugs nowadays than they did in the 1960s.

your link (cannabis/autism) is ignorant.... a lot of people use cannabis but i highly doubt that there are enough users to sway the cases of autism. maybe you need to look into the link between vaccinations and autism.

and the two cases you listed as examples might have more to do with your friend's "bloodline" instead of them using cannabis

The doctor in england who started that vaccinations causes autism nonsense was found to have financial motivations behind his finding that he never revealed.

      From(http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/03/health/research/03lancet.html)

" But an investigation by a British journalist found financial and scientific conflicts that Dr. Wakefield did not reveal in his paper. For instance, part of the costs of Dr. Wakefield’s research were paid by lawyers for parents seeking to sue vaccine makers for damages. Dr. Wakefield was also found to have patented in 1997 a measles vaccine that would succeed if the combined vaccine were withdrawn or discredited. "

" After years of investigation, the General Medical Council in Britain concluded that Dr. Wakefield had subjected 11 children to invasive tests like lumbar punctures and colonoscopies that they did not need and for which he did not receive ethical approval. "

The definition of autism changed to be more inclusive. That at least partially explains the perceived increase in the number of cases. Not all people diagnosed with autism are obviously autistic (as the character Rain Man would be obvious). There is no scientific link to cannabis and autism.

    • Now you want babies to be exposed to THC before they are even born?

I think this says pretty much all we need to know about the goals of the people leading your movement!

    • they allow zoloft after the first trimester, but cannabis is much more effective, and safer for treating anxiety and depression

    • cannabis is non-teratogenic...and because it is beneficial to the mother, helping her ease nausea, and relieve stress, the unborn baby can receive more nutrients and have better health.
