Where do all the neurotics live?

Psychologists have shown that human personalities can be classified along five key dimensions: agreeableness, conscientiousness, extroversion, neuroticism, and openness to experience. And each of these dimensions has been found to affect key life outcomes from life expectancy and divorce to political ideology, job choices and performance, and innovation and creativity.

What's more, it turns out these personality types are not spread evenly across the country. They cluster. And how they cluster tells us much: What city someone might want to move to, the broader character of regions, and even the creative and economic futures of broad swaths of the nation.

Drawing on a database of hundreds of thousands of individual personality surveys compiled by psychologists Jason Rentfrow, Sam Gosling, and Jeff Porter, the team was able to map the distribution of personality types across the United States. The result is a fascinating new way of looking at the country's terrain.

    • 24 french five dimensions maybe referring to five fold human design really?Also if you are looking at Scorpio types then you would look at their natural habitat in the world..Shaded discreet areas..cool places ..maybe underground or desert structures..night time activity more energetic...well camoflaged ..those kind of areas..you could look for all the astrological types..

    • Five whole dimensions, huh? And they've been mapped over the United States for useful lightning speed stereotyping? Has the field of psychology really come to this? Or is it journalism that should be looked at for featuring this? I guess what I really want to know is where do more Scorpios live. As opposed to Aquariuses or Leos. Where are those maps?

      I wonder what that says about the effects of this city on the psyche.

    • I would love to know how they define "neurotic'. I grew up in a neurotic area and now live in an unshaded area. I haven't noticed any decrease in the number of neurotic people I encounter.

    • A bit like the stories of the founding of the various Native indians original Tribe structures..it has already been in practise by them for years..living as a nautural cellular society with the planet..instead of a territorial box structure like the 20th century culture...
