Ellen DeGeneres announces new vegan site

http://vegan.ellen.warnerbros.com/

Comedienne and talk show personality launches online portal for new vegans with recipes, tips and links to resources and information.

.

Ellen DeGeneres has taken her love for the vegan lifestyle and turned it into a new website called "Going Vegan with Ellen." The portal, an offshoot of her official Ellen.com site, is an introduction to an all-plant diet and how to stop eating the animal products.

"Scientific studies supported by the American Dietetic Association have confirmed that vegan and vegetarian diets are associated with lower cholesterol, lower risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, lower risk of hypertension and Type 2 diabetes, lower body fat, and lower overall cancer rates," the site states. "In fact, studies have shown that a vegan diet can actually reverse diabetes, heart disease and even cancer."

DeGeneres, 53, went vegan in late 2008 after reading books like "Skinny B*tch," "Diet for a New America" and watching documentaries "Earthlings" and "Meet Your Meat." Her wife, actress Portia de Rossi, is also committed to the lifestyle — and one of 41 vegan celebrities named on the site. In addition, there are helpful FAQs, recipes, tips on getting started, and book and film resources.

Despite this outreach, some in the vegan community find Ellen's commitment somewhat half-baked due to her relationship with Cover Girl — one of the largest U.S. brands to conduct animal testing on its products. "I love Ellen but you can't promote a company like Cover Girl and promote a vegan site ... you lose all credibility," wrote one commenter on the site VegNews.

"She might have signed a contract with them before she knew about their practices," wrote another, in defense of the star. "Or maybe she is trying to change things from the inside. If she represents Cover Girl and uses that income to support veganism, then more power to her. She does more for veganism than anyone on here complaining."

Whatever your stance, we'd love to hear what you think of Ellen's new site! And if you're a vegan (or thinking about it), we'd love to hear about that, too. Chime in below.

    • Ive always semi-defended Ellen, because sometimes contracts like Cover Girl could be for years, however, if she REnews her contract, that is a different matter (and former vegetarian darling Drew Barrymore is doing ads for Cover Girl silk products, rather sickening)

    • Thanks for posting this. I'll check it out. Been a vegetarian (eating nothing that had a mother) for 15 years. Tried vegan for a year but couldn't stick with it completely. May be time to give it another shot.

Hi! If and when you decide to try veganism again, please consider visiting the following website:

      www.veganpeace.com

Straightforward facts, not a lot of emotion, and perhaps helpful to you. Also check out:

      http://current.com/groups/animal-rights-veganism

As for Ellen and Portia, they come up here to The Gentle Barn pretty regularly, but are still themselves learning the ropes (i.e., Ellen's contract with Cover Girl).

      Also consider "visiting":

      www.farmsanctuary.org and maybe even www.animalacres.org.

If you live in or near a major city, making a complete switch over to a vegan lifestyle is super easy. If you're further out from the mainstream, you'll need to read more and more websites about it, because then you'll get lots of advice and help, etc. And nowadays, vegan foods and products are available far more easily, especially online. You just have to be careful when you buy vegan treats because, online, that can get pretty costly, unfortunately. Whole Foods Market carries a great deal of vegan items, and Trader Joe's has some. Even regular supermarket chains now carry vegan foods. Just look for a V inside a circle (because some food manufacturers don't want to label their products with the word "vegan," because it might turn off a lot of people).

Thanks for at least caring enough to WANT to try!

Thanks for the info, I'll check it out. I think I'm still a member of Farm Sanctuary. My Mastercard is through them so they get a portion (small I'm sure) of whatever I spend. It's got a couple of pigs on it so lots of people comment on it and gives me a chance to tell them about the organization.

Oh, sweet! When Gene and Lori broke up (after having established Farm Sanctuary), Lori moved out to Southern California, and established Animal Acres. Animal Acres is now being taken care of by a handful of amazingly loyal and loving humans who are putting Animal Acres back on track as to what the place is supposed to be all about. I have many non-human friends there, all of whom I love deeply.

I hope I didn't sound pushy about trying veganism again. One of my closest friends tends to be a little more radical than I (which surprises me, since I grew up as a political radical), and can sometimes make folks feel uncomfortable when/if they ask about veganism. I'd rather invite people to Animal Acres or The Gentle Barn, and let them fall in love with the rescues, and then tell them just a few things about HOW and WHY those animals are now living out their lives in such sanctuaries. Slow steps...

It took ME a couple of years to make the complete switch over from vegetarianism to veganism. I thought I'd miss the cheese!

BOTH Farm Sanctuary locations were founded by Lori and Gene. They broke up easily seven years ago, I think.

There's more to the story of where Animal Acres is headed, but I can't say anything official... yet. Today I'm missing a major event there, because I have to leave for work in a few minutes.

      Off I run!
