..sorry to hear about your friend!
..i was born and raised a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I CHOSE to serve a full time mission, i wasn't PRESSURED to go, and feel blessed that i did! it was hard, but very rewarding. Indiviuals who come home "early" for various reasons do not have a "re programming center" as Jason mentioned, but coming home is just as interesting as it was leaving!
..there are NO PANTY RAIDS! there are rules and expectations, or standards if you will, to help a missionary keep his/her focus and to remember WHY they are there!

That was really stupid of your friend. I was raised a mormon and chose not to go on the "Mission". The only person or program I had to fear was from my own father's dissapointment which is where most of these kids feel the pressure.
I had several friends return home early for the same or similar reasons that your friend did and I'm hear to tell you there are no "re-programming center's". They came home to families that were shamed but they all got over it in the end.
I'd say it was a bad-break for your friend :(

No panty raids, but my friend who was a Mormon was in Brazil when he had a change of heart and renounced the religion. Since he was afraid of being shipped to Mormon a re-programming center the only way he could get home was through disease or severe injury. He chose the latter...and flung himself off of a cliff, breaking both of his legs. To this day he calls it his lucky break.
