You're a Uni-What?

uuplanet
Despite being one of America's top religions, many people have no clue what Unitarian Universalism is. Across the United States Atheists, Agnostics, Buddhists, Liberal Christians, Humanists, Jews, Pagans and others are gathering to search for truth, meaning and work to build a better world. In "You're a Uni-What?" Peter Bowden and the Rev. Amy Freedman shed some light on this popular, but often misunderstood religion.

    • I think that this is one of the few "gatherings of spiritual people" that I would be willing to honestly listen to. As Polytheistic as I am... there is always room to learn something different. Always.

    • Totally get your point. If it was started today from scratch I'd call it a philosophy. But it evolved out of years of history with Unitarians declaring the unity of God - no trinity - and the Universalists stating that all are saved when they die - no hell. Over time this religion evolved into more of an umbrella philosophy as you state. While it has evolved to be value/philosophy centric, it still has a lot to offer for those who don't want to "do it alone". Call it what you will.

    • I just don't really get the purpose of having a label, if there are no requirements. It seems (from first glance) that it is a blanket term for anyone who wants it. People name religions because that name represents a certain set of beliefs. If a religion is not defined, it may as well not be specified. It's like you're giving a title to "watever you think." religion implies dogma. I wouldn't call UU a religion; maybe a philosophy at most. I call myself an atheist, or secular, or irreligious, meaning nothing but my lack of belief in the metaphysical or supernatural. It is not a religion, so I don't really adhere to a certain title. Without common dogma, or beliefs, why lump them into the same group?
