Research by the Orthodox Jewish organisation Aish found that just over a third of people thought religions like Christianity and Judaism would still be practiced in Britain in 100 years' time.
Although four in 10 people said they would choose to be a member of the Christian religion, almost the same number said they would rather practice no religion at all."

I just want to repeat what MoonLoon said:
"Jesus never mentioned one word about a "Church". He simply asked for us to love one another, to help the needy, show compassion, and carry a spirit of forgiveness when dealing with our brothers and sisters, and respect the Father of all humanity.
Most angry poster's on this site are only aware of a modified version of the message Jesus was delivering." - 3 years ago

I think your all over complicating it actually... it wont take long for human beings to realise that "Self appointed, Agents of God" no matter what particular "Brand" they are selling are only interested in prolonging their own ends. Organised religion was a simple tool to manage the uneducated sheep herders of the time into some sort of social order through fear and guilt. Once man realises this ... and the fact that he doesn't need some "Marketing manager" to tell him that he mustn't kill in order to be a good human, then these brands of religion are defunct.
Were almost there... we just need a little more confidence in ourselves.. and the churches will vanish.
We give far too much importance to these "brands" and not enough faith in ourselves... God didn't invent man in his image... God was invented and developed by "Brand" managers in Man's image. the sooner we realise this the sooner "Brand Zealots" will disappear.

True religion within Christianity has been on the downslide, no doubt with the help of zealots like Roy Moore and Warren Jeffs. However, spirituality and belief in Jesus Christ has, as far as I'm aware of, not decreased. As we enter in to a more international world, there will be pressure for some facets of society to change their practicing religion, but I believe that one thing our generation has is tolerance for other sexes, races, and religions and coexistance will be easy and acceptable. And as far as the growth of Islam and Buddhism, it still remains that Christianity is one of the most easily practiced and (Of course I'm biased, but have researched other religions and attended several different ceremonies.) most gratifying religions to dabble in.

I have to disagree with a lot of what you say. I dont think that our generation is tolerant... we are more tolerant than the generations before us, but there is not complete tolerance. Our generation performs acts of hate daily. And to say that we are tolerant of races and promote gender equality.... have you watched MTV lately. (neither have i). But the images and behavior to which our generation adheres speaks very much against tolerance and equality.
I'm in favor of the abandonement of disorganized religion because it has done much more damage than good for this world.
Ask a buddhist if they think that christianity is most fulfilling. I'm raised catholic and I would have much rather been raised budhist.

Christians and Christianity has always been attacked and ridiculed from Day 1. All I can do for the people that attack Christians is pray for them. Living your life as a Christian is a burden. Carrying the weight of the Cross is a burden I am willing to bare.

I am so sorry to hear that you feel being a Christian is a burden, I am not sure why you would feel that way. I love Jesus and God, to get up everyday and feel the love of God in my life is a blessing that somedays brings me to tears. I see the love of God everywhere and embrace everyone I meet as my brother or sister, because they are, whether they like it or not, I will still love them and pray for them. I hope that the joy and peace having a relationship with God brings will be with you and you will be in my prayers. I know that dealing with people who have no belief in God can be trying, but I could never see serving my God as a burden. I am hoping that maybe what you meant to say came out wrong, but if it didn't I will be praying for you. God Bless You.

You only need organized religion until you find spirituality within yourself. I predict that not only organized religion, but many of the control structures that now exist in the world will come crashing down in time. Controversial topic...I don't think Christianity/Judaism are likely to die out any time soon. You must keep in mind how many religion based colleges there are just in the United States, consider Catholic University in DC or Hebrew College in Newton Mass, the students there are devout in their religion. While I do see many churches converting to recreation halls, or theaters, the previous congregations most likely are still around but leasing a different building.

it seems that tradition has a knack for enduring so although religion may be conceived of differently i'm sure people will still be Christian in 100 years. Furthermore given the probability of devastation, drought, flooding, starvation etc. predicted to accompany future overpopulation, climate change, food/water scarcity and whatever else is coming our way, i would imagine a lot of angry confused people will turn to religious explanations in the future.
unless of course wiki-ality and Current enlighten us all to the scientific explanations for future devastation, then future people will just be pissed off at us and atheists.

socialism will eventually (and hopefully peacefully) replace barbaric religions like the abrahamic faiths. besides wasn't jesus supposed to be back by now? or like...sometime in the next 40 years? that'll be the nail in the coffin when, surprise surprise, nothing changes (except maybe the suicide rate)

Something to think about:
He was born in an obscure village
The child of a peasant woman
He grew up in another obscure village
Where he worked in a carpenter shop
Until he was thirtyHe never wrote a book
He never held an office
He never went to college
He never visited a big city
He never travelled more than two hundred miles
From the place where he was born
He did none of the things
Usually associated with greatness
He had no credentials but himselfHe was only thirty three
His friends ran away
One of them denied him
He was turned over to his enemies
And went through the mockery of a trial
He was nailed to a cross between two thieves
While dying, his executioners gambled for his clothing
The only property he had on earthWhen he was dead
He was laid in a borrowed grave
Through the pity of a friendNineteen centuries have come and gone
And today Jesus is the central figure of the human race
And the leader of mankind's progress
All the armies that have ever marched
All the navies that have ever sailed
All the parliaments that have ever sat
All the kings that ever reigned put together
Have not affected the life of mankind on earth
As powerfully as that one solitary lifeDr James Allan © 1926. For more information and other versions see SJVIS

PatrickEdwardMurray, I could have swooorn Jesus spent time in Egypt and that it's rumored he learned a thing or two there. The literary prose you quoted kinda makes it sound he was unlearned and was stuck in small-town narrowness. He met lots of people and listened to many different sides of life. He's so influential, I think, because he had a diverse and educated outlook on things--- and then some people turned the memory of a great person as a tool for power.
Don't be mad at Jesus, folks. He's been dead 2,000 years. Be mad at those who twisted his ideas of progressivism and understanding.

I posted this a while ago about Gnostic Christianity.
Marcion was a man who taught in Rome and is considered one of the Fathers of Gnosticism.
Gnosis means "knowing", this mean a whole lot more than mere "faith".
When you know something it is a deeper understanding than blindly believing on faith things that don't make sense.

I think if we don't abandon all the major world religions based on salvation, we'll all go extinct.
This world was not made for us, and we do not own it. We are subject to the same rules as every other species we share this planet with.
Salvationist religions have steered us down a path toward destruction, Christianity leading the pack the whole way. If we use our minds (which got us this far in the first place) we may stand a chance at surviving.

this is not surprising in any sense at all. Europe in its entirety is drifting further and further away from centers of Religiosity, with the viable exception of practicing Muslim immigrants. The utter irony of this conundrum is the fact that for multitudes of centuries the European people were engulfed in Christianity, and were by default defined by the Clergy's inexorable show of power and prestige. The United States remains somewhat of a pariah in comparison, being somewhat of an apex of Christianity. But while Europe drifts away from the faith other regions, in particular Latin America will remain entrenched in religion.

For better or for worst, I extremely doubt it. Traditions of christianity exist in many parts of the world, and I think the change in traditions due to the creation of newer generations will be at a much slower rate than they predict. Religion is not always a bad thing. Like everything in life and humanity, there's a balance of good and evil. Religion, whether Christianity or Islam or Jehovah's Witness, it's how you use religion, and put it out for the good of others, to not curse, or put threats on our decisions against the Bible. Religion is to better YOU. I believe the world is gonna change in a century just like it always has for the previous centuries before us... and honestly all civilization fear change... because there's a fear of the unknown...
Sorry to encourage more fear into your trembling soul... Idk what's gonna happen in the future if Christianity is gonna flourish or continue on... but it's gonna be a BIG change....

Intimidation has been Christianity’s greatest promotion method, shame is second. Shame: to make someone feel inferior, to ostracize, a state of disgrace or dishonor.
Guilt has been Christianity’s greatest "control the masses" method.

If religions made sense they would have a longer shelf life. I think people yearn for spirituality so there will always be a faith of some sort. I am personally an atheist but think people should be able to believe whatever they want even if it's nothing at all, and not be judged for that. Atheists often have better morals and compassion than so called Christians from my personal experience. But the real issue is religious influence on law and government which I thought was unconstitutional but Bush seems to have forgotten about that piece of paper that mentioned separation of church and state.

Christ consciousness is having the attitude of Christ, surrendering your will to the Holy Spirit and allowing it to become living truth within you. You remove all your masks and let go of your idolatry of matter, embracing the universal oneness of all living things. It takes mediation, it takes perseverance and most of all it takes love. Man. Sanctimonious crap. The likelihood that the 'christ' you people talk about ever existed is about 0% first of all, but if he/she did exist, it was two centuries ago at least. How dare you people presume to know the mind of anyone, but espeically someone who's been dead for 2000 or so years and who was NEVER directly quoted: the writers who are supposed to have written down what this non-existent person said did so at least 60 and as much as 300 years later.

I think that world leaders will always cling to the Christian religion, if not for any other reason but for something on which to blame their bad decisions and reasons to fight a war. Christianity will probably never go extinct, just as war will probably never end.
It is sad to me because I have my own modified set of beliefs that are a combination of Christian beliefs and many other things. I hate how degraded Christianity has become and how some people have taken it to such extremes that are actually contradictory to the whole message...

aswift1, I've also modified my beliefs. What people don't realize is that it's also become a culture. Most Jewish people I know don't practice Judaism, but will still proclaim to be Jewish before anything else.
This is probably what's going to happen to Christians. We aren't going to throw away chapel weddings, "the coming of Jesus" on Christmas Eve, the carnivals/fairs on Halloween, etc. Those aspects of Christian culture will remain and people are still going to identify with that. Catholics, regardless of their reformed beliefs, may still practice communion in the future.
With that in mind, I don't think Christianity is going anywhere even if people start to believe in it less.
Even though lots of religions fade away eventually, not all of them do. Christianity has the potential to be one of them if the zealots relinquish control and let the majority of followers (who aren't extremists, btw) reform it to represent its modern audience.
Christians have to stop fearing that they "loose" if they become humble and accept the fact that a bit needs changing. I think if politics gets out of the way, Christians will be able to.

It amazes me that ascendancy and the lack of humility among the Christian leaders is not quelled by the followers. Oh, that’s right, “followers”. Christians call for Muslims to stand up to their zealous leaders, yet won’t do the same. Bush’s favorite philosopher is Jesus, yet he’s a war monger and is revered by 30% of Christians in the US (so the approval polls show). Bin Laden also started a war (jihad), and is revered by Muslims as standing up to the Christians. Queue the madness.
Bottom line, Muslims are using the very same tactics used by Christianity, intimidation and terror, to perpetuate it’s cause. (The inquisitions were acts of terror against the populace.)
Foot note to correct my earlier post: Although toleration was give to Christianity in 311CE by Constantine I, Christianity did not become the legal religion of the Roman Empire until the reign of Theodosius I (379-395). At that point not only was Christianity made the official religion of the Empire, but other religions were declared illegal.

All you're talking about are extremists on both sides. Most Christians and Muslims know they aren't mortal enemies and co-exist.
Not all Muslims use "the very same tactics" used by all Christians. What's really going on is that politics, again, as used a common trait among the population to unite them. Once they see each other as one people, the government tells them who the "others" are. The Crusades wasn't started by the bible. The dogma came from the government.

The so-called "leaders" can behave as they wish, because they conviently quote old tribal documents in such a way that their behaviour is 'supported' by scripture, of which these 'leaders' claim some sort of intimate knowledge not available to the followers, who are chastised for questioning. Mind control.
Disgusting.

As with everything even Christianity is evolving. What's "dying out" is the old rigid dogmas.
But they still could serve as a "conveyor belt" as Ken Wilber puts it since everyone has to start as square one in their psychological development and Christianity goes all the way from the bottom stages to the top.

i do believe denominations will disappear because our generation doesn't necessarily agree with indoctrination, but as far as the tenets of Jesus they will remain. As long as there are sick people, oppressed people, people wanting to make the impossible possible Jesus' legacy will continue.

I'd be surprised if it lasted that long....I believe that science takes precedence over religion. People just need to get educated!

The homo sapien in it's present state of development needs it's dogma and substitute parents - unless there is a radical evolution of the brain in that time (which is quite possible) then the large dogmatic, rules based religions will remain.
An equally likely scenario is one that the main dogmatic organised religions ultimately aim for - catastrophe from over population. - 3 years ago

Uh, hello, I don't! Me and most members of my generation. We're slowly but surely growing out of religion, and as dumb as the rest of my high school classmates can be, religion is very low. We're the next step, and the next generation will have even less believers. Evolution is eliminating the primitive subroutine of religion and in some cases replacing it with a very open-minded and controllable kind of faith, which I've seen in person numerous times.

True - another equally nasty scenario is the old religions get replaced with worshiping objects with no true connection to themselves. A dangerous situation - something more intelligent needs to replace the void left by Christianity (and the other insane religions) as they fall.
p.s. wait till some of those classmates get older - a percentage will fall back to the organised faiths to cover the hole left in their lives.

Fat chance, Christianity is still strong in the U.S. and all over Europe. Countries like the U.S. will always have a strong impact, socialy and politically, on the U.K.

It's definitely possible. It seems as we gain knowledge and access to information the need for all powerful super beings decreases. Welcome to the "information society".

It's good to see old dogmas go away, being replaced by a new generation which doesn't really call it a religion, just a "faith". Even though I consider faith a meat limitation for me, some people use it to their advantage. Just make sure you control it, not the other way around.

Just about all religions that existsed PRIOR to the invention of Judiasm have loooong since ended. Why shouldn't this one?
No one is practicing ANY of the old Roman religions, the old Greek religions, the old Egyptian religions, the old Viking religions, etc.
The few exceptions seem to be religions that, frankly, are more humane and spiritually mature such as taoism, Zen -- Eastern religions.
The religions that are more spiritual and more like philosophy have a role in a modern society.
Thor and Zeus really don't have a serious religious role in a 21st century world because they are waaaay to backward to be practical.
Christanity is a lot like old school hunter-gatherer religions -- nontribesman are evil, kill your enemies with a club, everyone must die, be nice only to those who worship same god as tribe, grunt! grunt!
Um, yeah. That type of primitive, backward old school religion went out of style waaay back when the Aztecs tore the heart out of the last remaining virgin and said, "You know what? I'm beginning to think this wasn't such a great idea! There must be a better way."
If it wasn't for MTV-ifying our national religion (c'mon, Christanity is our national religion and we all know it) I doubt it would have lasted even this long.
Ending the practice of human sacrifice only made our lives better.
Ending the Witch trials only made our lives better.
Transitioning Christianity out of our lives and replacing it with something more spiritually mature and enlightened can only be to our benefit.

Wow, did you ever read any of the new testament? Jesus only gave one commandment, love one another as I have first loved you. Your attributing mankinds faults to Christianity, it is mankind, not God that is so corrupt. I don't see how taking away Christianity would in anyway make the world better! You should really think about why you feel that blaming religion for the woes of the world is your coping mechanism, rather than facing the truth that there are a lot, a whole lot, of evil people who do unthinkable things for no reason. It isn't Christianity that is corrupt, it is mankind and its use of the name to pervert and manipulate the world.

Modern Christianity is a portrait of what thousands of years of political corruption looks like. It wasn't always about bile spewing. Hunger for power, control, and money is ultimately what corrupted the church. It's not about instilling fear into the hearts of it's members but sadly that's how it's survived for so long. It makes people feel guilty. When they feel guilty, they feel insecure. When they feel insecure they can use their bible as a weapon to take the attention off themselves and onto godless heathens that "threaten their existence" . Bible thumping is a diversion to hide a "Christian's" guilty conscience. But it's all about power and fear is a great way to get control over someone. The church is finally losing control and I think it's great!

pwdrskir, anyone can forgive another person, God can give a greater forgiveness, an absolution. But don't be so jumpy, you are really angry at everyone who doesn't share your exact beliefs, relax, you'll live longer and happier. Tolerance remember.
