On one hand it makes sense to say that an insular community should be allowed to uphold its own standards, but on the other this is a public works project that benefits the entire city.
What do you think?

I used to live in this neighborhood. So weird when you go around the corner and BAM! It's another world. I was always kind of bothered when walking or riding the bus through that part of the neighborhood. So many women in wigs, not allowed to venture outside of the community without their husbands, or hold jobs. From the outside, it appears to be an extremely repressive culture. I'm not advocating disrespect of their culture or religion, but when groups like this live in a major city, they should expect to be around people not like them, and perhaps reevaluate their views/culture to be more consistent with those around them.
Anyway, yeah, I say they should get over it, they have to be around non-Hasids at SOME point. Do they really expect to shield themselves from seeing people who aren't completely covered from head to toe? It's unrealistic. I know for a fact people already ride bikes through the neighborhood, I myself have walked through it. What are they doing in that situation now?

Maybe they can build an enclosed bike tunnel for all those scantily-clad hipster women so that the Hasidic Jew men won't be bothered by them.

This is the United States. Separation of Church and state - remember. If they find the United States culture incompatible with their own views, perhaps they should move to a place where they are more comfortable.
The bikers are after all on publicly owned and maintained streets.
I see this as an attack on America in a way. If the city agrees to allow a religious group dictate law in a given district, then we'd have to allow say radical Muslims to enforce their laws here also - or are we talking giving special privileges to this group?

It's fascinating to watch what's happening in Williamsburg with the Hasids taking over one part and the yuppie types (does anyone really use 'hipster'?) taking over the other. There's bound to be conflict. However, the Hasids need to realize that they're not living in their own world governed by their own rules.

I wonder how the media and the public would treat the issue if it was the Muslim community in downtown Brooklyn complaining about women riding bikes in modest closing…

Haha what's everyone's problem with hipsters?
Maybe it's cause I don't know many, if any, but I think they dress pretty cute..
And I like their bikes.. - 3 years ago

This is ridiculous. I understandd the Hasidic jews have been in that neighborhood for many generations, but really they have to get over it. They are many people in the world who's views are going to be different from theirs. They can't isolate themselves from the world espcailly in a city so diverse as New York City. They can all togehter buy a plot of land and make an gated community.

The solution is easy. The Hasids should dress like bears to scare away the hot hipster girls. Done.

I think the problem with certain aspects of religious beliefs is that they are outdated. If Hasidic Jews are to be so extreme in this day and age, they should elect to have they eyeballs torn from their sockets...c'mon now people

I say build the bike lane and allow the "hipsters".
after being harassed by the Hassys enough times I'm sure they will put on some modest clothing before venturing through. hell even if women (or men for that matter) walk through a Hassidic neighborhood wearing a sleeveless out fit they are bound to hear "How Much". I think the problem will solve it's self over time. - 3 years ago

Sometimes I get the feeling that hasidic jews see a person in tight jeans on a bike and direct their car directly at them. By the way, when did hating hipsters become the new hip thing to do?

Here's what bugs me about hipsters:
They're nothing to aspire to be, yet if you're not like them, they mock you for being a 'conformist.' I think that kind of trendy hypocrisy is bull shit.
In so many bars downtown in my city, I see cute hipster type guys. I'm not shy so I will go and try to start a conversation, but the second they see my business casual outfit they lose interest because I work for 'the man.' It's stupid.
I originally thought that hipsters were cool because they were not afraid to 'be themselves' but that's not really what they're doing... is it?

Hipsters piss me off sometimes, but people should be allowed to wear whatever they want. We all have to live together on this planet, and to make concessions to keep one group of people happy while it is inconvenient for everyone else is just unrealistic. Besides, the girl in the picture is only showing her shoulders and arms. I know that's not 'fully covered' but it sure is far from 'scantily clad.' Geez.

Now I'm not pro hipster by any means but, Hasidics/muslims/christians whatever do not have the right to tell anyone what to do, what to wear or go.
If they want to have a closed community they can buy some land and build one and create whatever rules they want there. I'm sure they'll claim intolerance of their views but aren't they just being intolerant of others? I wish people could just get over themselves and get on with it. Also, I'm sick of women being used as a scapegoat. It's all the women's fault for bearing their arms and not covering their heads!! Stupid nonsense argument that men have been using to control women and their bodies forever. ugh!

I am guessing Hasidic Jews in this neighborhood will, very shortly, be seeing many more hipsters much, much more scantily clad. Good thing for them, winter is on the way.

As much as I respect the Hasidic community and their right to worship as they choose, they also have to realize that they SHARE the city with other people that also have their own rights that need to be respected. This has gone a bit too far and they, the Hasidics, need to be more tolerant of others.

Even if they did not put the bike lanes through the community, people would still ride their bikes through if they needed to...
...so I don't see how not putting a specific lane through there is going to help the Hasids situation...
it's hard to not look at people who look a certain way in the whole world, much less America, much less New York City, much less Williamsburg...

I think they should just ban hipsters, or at least people who willing refer to themselves as hipsters (which isn't many).
Hipsters are a vacuous burden on our society. At least gangster rap produced some memorable songs.

Maybe they could make the bike lanes covered, that way cyclists would not only stay dry, but their sexy, scantily-clad bodies wouldn't offend the eyes of any of the local Hasids.
