Yesterday The Archbishop of Olinda and Recife, Jose Cardoso Sobrinho, excommunicated all people involved in helping a nine-year-old girl get a abortion. She was sexually abused by her stepfather, and when she was taken to the hospital after complaining about a stomach pain it was found out that she was expecting twins.
Today the President of Brazil Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, came to the defense of the doctors and the mother and critisized the Catholic clergy man for holding such a conservative beliefs.
He said "the doctors did what had to be done: save the life of a girl nine years old. In this case, the medical profession was more right than the Church."
Brazil only permits abortions in cases of rape or health risks to the mother.
