But a growing body of research in what one sociologist describes as the "emerging field of secularity" is challenging long-held assumptions about the relationship of religion and effective governance.
In a paper posted recently on the online journal Evolutionary Psychology, independent researcher Gregory S. Paul reports a strong correlation within First World democracies between socioeconomic well-being and secularity. In short, prosperity is highest in societies where religion is practiced least.
Using existing data, Paul combined 25 indicators of societal and economic stability — things like crime, suicide, drug use, incarceration, unemployment, income, abortion and public corruption — to score each country using what he calls the "successful societies scale." He also scored countries on their degree of religiosity, as determined by such measures as church attendance, belief in a creator deity and acceptance of Bible literalism.
Comparing the two scores, he found, with little exception, that the least religious countries enjoyed the most prosperity. Of particular note, the U.S. holds the distinction of most religious and least prosperous among the 17 countries included in the study, ranking last in 14 of the 25 socioeconomic measures.
Paul is quick to point out that his study reveals correlation, not causation. Which came first — prosperity or secularity — is unclear, but Paul ventures a guess. While it's possible that good governance and socioeconomic health are byproducts of a secular society, more likely, he speculates, people are inclined to drop their attachment to religion once they feel distanced from the insecurities and burdens of life.

First off, Ann Coulter is a nutjob. She's the right wing version of Maureen Dowd. I look at all the good religion has done, and see where we would be without it. No hospitals, no soup kitchens, no foodbanks, no shelters, no Catholic Worker movement, etc. The more secular one is, the LESS openminded and the MORE judgemental one tends to be. Look at the so called "diversity" according to the secular Left. It preaches "You can believe whatever you wish to believe, but if it disagrees with my beliefs, you are ________________. (fill in your favorite epithet here- racist, bigot, neanderthal, homophobe, etc.) True Christians- Authentic Christians- like those of The Catholic Worker are much more accepting of people than those of the Left- look how they reacted when people disagreed with ObamaCare. Look at the venom, the hostility, how Nancy Pelosi referred to the protesters as "un-American". Imagine- excercising our First Amendment Right as being un-American! Anti-Catholicism is the last acceptable predjudice- fomented by the Left. Look at the hatred spewed forth by the Left towards African Americans who dare stray from the plantation and become conservatives- like Alonzo Rachel, Clarence Thomas, Thomas Sowell. MLK was a republican you know. Who filibusteres the civil rights act? All democrats- not a single republican. MLK, Jr. was guided by his Christian faith- among multitudes.........You can take non Christians like Fred Phelps and claim he represents Christianity. He does not. No Christian would ever do any of the crap he has pulled. What hell did Cs Lewis or JRR Tolkien raise, or Avery Dulles, SJ or GK Chesterton or Ronald Knox ever raise? Let's look at authentic Christianity, and NOT the right wing televangelists who pose as Christians. I have yet to see an "Atheist Army" red kettle during the holidays, nor have I seen "The Atheist Army" respond to natural didasters like Katrina.....Yes, there are many good atheists (bad ones too, who get their kicks out of being bigots like Bill Maher, Janean Garofalo, etc.) Let's be a little more open minded about Christian belief, shall we?

Good article, I'm not so sure that secularity came after prosperity though. Because the more secular you, the more rational, open minded, and less jugdemental you tend to be. Which leads to a more pleasant soceity. In the black community, speaking from experience, they seem to be more accepting of a criminal who kneels every night than a law abiding atheists, that's pretty irrational in my opinion.
