More Early WATCHMEN Reviews Pouring IN!!!

Everyone's sounding very pumped for this film. I'll post my podcast review tomorrow.

Here's a review from the London World Premiere:

Hi,

I was lucky enough to be afforded a ticket to the world premiere of Watchmen in London last night, thought I'd send in a quick review as I can't seem to find one anywhere else!

Right, bear in mind this is going to be quick as it's midnight now and it's been a damn long day.

First off, the film is stunning - to look at and to listen to. Zack Snyder has outdone himself with look - absolutely beautiful. The soundtrack is phenominal - this is demonstarted with a beautiful opening montage set to Dylan's times are a changing, and carried right through to 'Hallelujiah' blaring out when Silk Spectre and Night Owl get it together in Archie. Some of the songs run the risk of feeling a little out of place sometimes...like a random sequence involving '99 red baloons' that booms when silk spectre meets night owl for dinner...but for the most part they are effective in setting the tone and the period of the film, and besdies, most of them are just fucking good songs that sound even better when married up with beautiful visuals...even if as I say, they can seem a little random

I read the graphic novel last year for the first time, and I deliberately stopped short of the ending so as to allow myself the oppertunity to enjoy the film without comparing every damn frame to the book. So, with this in mind I can't comment on the whole 'squid' debacle, and whether the film is better to have left it out. I did keep my eyes peeled for any reference to a 's.q.u.i.d'- type inference to the 'doomsday device' that I've read could be mentioned, but if there was one I certainly didn't see it. To be honest though, every frame is crammed with so much visualy arresting information that it's damn near impossible to notice all on a first viewing.

Without droning on about performances, they're all good - with Rorshach being one hell of an exception...he's incredible. Seriously, that guy absolutely nails it, from the moment his masked is ripped off, to when he flushes the dwarf down the toilet...I hate to say it but the guy gives Ledger a run for his money in terms of pulling of the 'psycho with a point' thing.

The film is utterly uncompromising in terms of the ridiculously adult content it deals withEveryone's sounding very pumped for this film. I'll post my podcast review tomorrow. Here's a review from the... more

Another Early WATCHMEN Review!

"Watchmen" has been part of my life for most of what I consider my adulthood. I still remember holding the book for the first time, looking at that striking smiley face graphic, flipping through and being confused by what I was seeing. At that point, in 1988, I was still flirting with getting back into comics. I had a pretty serious collection when I was a kid, and during one of our many moves, an entire refrigerator box full of comic books and Fangorias and Mad magazine and even a few contraband Playboys went "missing," vanishing into thin air. Broke my heart, and it convinced me to grow up and stop collecting comic books.

So my first year at college, there was this sort of flea market every Wednesday afternoon at the student union, and one guy had a book stall where he always featured a number of graphic novels. And sure enough, my geek DNA reasserted itself and I started buying them occasionally. One of the first ones I fell in love with was a "Swamp Thing" trade paperback I bought written by Alan Moore. I was so impressed with the way he took this potentially silly character and invested it with real soul and made it about something. I decided to keep my eye out for anything else the guy had for sale that had Alan Moore's name on it, and so when I picked up that one especially thick graphic novel, and I flipped through and saw the weird naked blue guy and the pages and pages of text and the pirate stuff and, sure enough, Alan Moore's name on the cover, I knew "Watchmen" was heading home with me.

And there is no way the me I was at 18 could have imagined that 21 years later, I'd be standing at the Beverly Wilshire hotel, ten feet from a row of costumes worn by Rorschach and Nite Owl and Silk Spectre II and Ozymandias, playing a "Watchmen" video game set before the book, waiting to talk to Dave Gibbons. Even if you'd tried to explain it to me, I would have laughed at you. Because the first time I read that book, it was like someone turned a key in my head and I suddenly saw graphic storytelling as something with far more potential than I ever realized. "Watchmen" was the moment I realized that comics, like films, are limitless in definition. They can be about anything. They can address any subject. They can express any emotion, any idea. The only limitations have to do with the writers and artists themselves. I know that may seem blindingly obvious, but when you grow up reading comics and everything is always exactly the same, you start to accept that maybe that's all there is, maybe that's all comics can be. You believe in the limitations because everyone else seems to accept them so readily.

I felt so strongly about "Watchmen" that the first time I heard rumors about them trying to make a film from the book, I was angry. Keep in mind, "Brazil" is one of my two favorite films, but even so, I felt like any film version, even one directed by Terry Gilliam, was just going to savage everything that was great and beautiful about the book, and I hoped that the whole thing would flame out in development. And over the years, I watched them get close to making the film repeatedly, and even once I started to warm to the idea, I still felt like compromise was going to have to be a major ingredient in whatever version was eventually going to happen. And then, back in 2002, I read David Hayter's script for the film.

Early WATCHMEN Reviews Are In!!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with my thoughts on WATCHMEN. I must preface this with a couple of things. First off, I will be discussing some specific spoilers, but I’ll make sure to hit those at the end of the review so if you don’t want to know you can be fairly certain of not hitting any huge spoilers through the main review.

Secondly, this review needs to be taken in with a certain context. Much like Alan Moore and David Gibbons’ original comics, the movie is dense and packed to the gills with visual information, so my thoughts are first impressions. I’m eager to see it a second time to see what holds up, what is clarified and what, if anything, has less impact.

I had to do the same with The Dark Knight, actually. So many layers, so much foreshadowing and ambiguous character development… that I had to see it a second time to actually explore the world presented on the screen.

Now, WATCHMEN isn’t as good as THE DARK KNIGHT. I don’t think anyone can successfully argue that DARK KNIGHT is lesser filmmaking than WATCHMEN, but both share one common bond. They shouldn’t exist in this over-homogenized, lowest common denominator studio system that dictates what is made.

DARK KNIGHT is the very first comic book movie to take the ludicrous and completely ground it in reality. Others have come close, but it was Dark Knight that reached the finish line completely. The villain was dark, the structure was uncommon, there were real threats, real deaths and true ambiguity in the villains and heroes alike.

WATCHMEN is a near 3 hour long adaptation of one of the most dense and layered stories in the history of comic books. It’s a $100 million R-rated studio picture that keeps almost everything that people have been saying for two decades now would never ever make it into a movie.

The gore, graphic violence, graphic sex, the comic’s structure, the foul language, the bleak ending, a main villain that is possibly the hero of the book depending on how you look at things, the blue genitalia and the overall grayness of character all survive in the context of what the book demands: an epic spectacle.

I know there are those who would argue with me on that, but don’t misunderstand me. Spectacle isn’t what the book was about, but it’s very much part of the world. Can you imagine a film version without Mars? Can you imagine one without Antarctica? Or without the world-changing plot coming to fruition?

Crossing Over is an upcoming 2009 film about illegal immigrants of different nationalities struggling to achieve legal status in Los Angeles. The film deals with the border, document fraud, the asylum and green card process, work-site enforcement, naturalization, the office of counter terrorism and the clash of cultures. Crossing Over was written and directed by Wayne Kramer, himself an immigrant from South Africa, and is a remake of his 1995 short film of the same name. Kramer is editing it alongside Frank Marshall.[1] The movie was filmed on location in Los Angeles in 2007.

The film was originally planned to have an Iranian character murder his sister in an honor killing, but the National Iranian American Council opposed this, saying that it was unrealistic and offensive, and it was re written.[2]
