Why are Premier League teams so dominant in the Champions leauge?

Pardon
In this weeks Champions League games English clubs hold the mid-way advantage in all three ties, Johnathon Wilson seeks to put his finger on the reason for English clubs dominance of the competition in recent seasons.

The Champions League is arguably the greatest football competition in the world, with many players believing it represents a higher standard of football than the World Cup. In the last four seasons England has provided nine of the 16 Champions League semi-finalists, five of the finalists and two of the winners. The next best league being Spain with three semi finalists and one winner.

A single counties domination of the competition is nothing new, with nearly all of Europe's top footballing countries having had a period of domination in the past. Is it just to do with the money available to premier league clubs at the moment? Does the fact that the same four English clubs qualify every year have anything to do with it? Or do the tactics employed by certain managers at different times have an impact? What do you think?

    • I think it's generally because the premiership has the paciest players in the world and the new age game is all about how fast you are and how quickly you can hit teams on the counter attack. A lot of the italians teams that dominated years ago are full of old skool superstars who aren't getting any younger (Maldini, Seedorf and that young buck new signing Mr Beckham himself). The french have some really pacy youngsters too and of recently have been doing well in the champions league the game is evolving and it's very interesting to see the change!

But anyway let's face it most of the British teams consist of players who nationally play outside the uk so it's not a wonder that they are dominating representing England but not many of them are English!

    • One Observer journalist over the weekend said the hype surrounding the premier league was unwarranted. He said the title race was all but over, meaning even the Scottish league was proving more exciting than the English premiership. OUCH!

As for why are we so dominant in Europe - it must have something to do with the type of player that pepper the top 4 clubs ... they live for those big European nights and relish performing on a European stage.
