Christopher Jordan shows that it is profoundly simple to make an incredibly powerful parabolic dish with a long focal length. This essentially solves the 2500 year old Archimedes Burning Mirror problem. The ancients could make glass, ceramics, cut and vaporize metals and stones with the devices. The devices also provide modern researchers with a facility to make intensities of 500Mw/sqm or more. This has allowed new materials to be made and broadens the number of groups who can indulge high temperature research. The historical implications are discussed in the Secrets of the Sun Sects by Christopher Jordan.
