Her childhood on the beach
Sofía Mulanovich Aljovín was born in Lima the 24th June.
Her parents are Herbert Mulanovich Barreda and Ines Aljovín de Mulanovich. She has 2 brothers, Herbert the eldest and Matías the younger.
Sofia studied in the San Silvestre School and since she was a girl she was fond of the sea.
She learned to swim at the age of three years in the Walter Ledgard academy and began surfing on Morey Boogey at the age five at the beaches of Máncora.
First steps in surf
At the age of nine she changed with much enthusiasm to a regular surfboard. Her first trainer as a kid was Robert Meza, and then was trained by Magoo de la Rosa as she started to compete abroad.
At the age of 12, she traveled as a companion to an international championship in Guadalupe where she impressed everyone with her abilities on a board.
At the age of thirteen she began surfing, sponsored by Billabong Peru, and attended the U.S. Open of Surfing where she advanced to the quarterfinals.
Competition
In 1998 she won the Pan-American championship in Brazil. In 1999 she was officially sponsored by Roxy compete in the WQS circuit in order to qualify for the highest division, the ASP Women’s World Championship Tour (WCT).
In her first year on the WQS circuit she placed 11th overall, missing the cut for the WCT by one position. In her second year on the WQS she placed 2nd overall, exhibiting a modern surfing style and thus qualifying for the WCT.
Her first year on the WCT, which consists of the 18 best surfers of the world, she placed 7th overall as one of the youngest competitors and gained valuable knowledge and experience for the future.
After winning three consecutive WCT events in 2004, she went on to win the coveted Women’s World Championship Title at the mere age of 21. The first South American, male or female, to win a World Championship Title, Surfer Poll Award, ESPY Award and most recently inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame in Huntington Beach, Ca, Sofia proves her country’s motto, “Si Se Puede”, Yes, You Can. Admired for her humble demeanor, intense love for surfing, Peruvian pride, and heartfelt passion and dedication to be the best in her sport, Sofia is iconic. When Sofia is not traveling the globe she can be found surfing with her brothers in Peru, listening to Bob Marley, or creating and editing surf videos on her laptop.
