    • Detroit has two bus systems overlapping. Why - it has something to do with federal funding I suppose.
DDOT (Detroit Dept of Transportation) - runs within the city of Detroit and very limited areas of immediately surrounding suburbs. These buses have no bike racks.
SMART (Southeast Michigan Authority on Regional Transit) - runs through many of Detroit's suburbs yet fails to extend far enough to provide a link to transportation systems in Ann Arbor, Flint, or Port Huron. These buses have either 2 or 3 bike rack system on the front.

Notice I mention buses... nothing of light rail or other forms. Detroit has been proud of its automotive heritage. In my opinion as a result discouraged mass transit and serves as a 'showcase environment' for auto workers driving new vehicles.

There has been a resurgence of interest in moving from the suburbs into Detroit by adventuresome creative class young adults. This has brought interest back to bicycles, ride sharing, and other transportation options. However the push hasn't been a strong enough force to cause a landslide of interest.

Most suburbanites remain in the suburbs coming into Detroit for sports events, perhaps work, and rarely shopping. Their visits are usually to the purpose at hand and leave without exploring beyond their destination.
