Obama family may find a dog ... on TV! At the Thanksgiving Day National Dog Show

Forget the usual post-turkey football coma this Thanksgiving. After all, who needs the NFL when you could be watching the NDS?

That would be the National Dog Show, set to air Thursday at noon on NBC immediately after the 82nd annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

"You get to see every breed from the seven-pound Havanese to the 150-pound Irish Wolfhound," said show spokesman Steve Griffith.

More than 2,000 pedigreed pups from more than 150 breeds will head into the ring for the seventh annual show held in Reading, Pa., including one new breed – the Dogue de Bordeaux, known stateside as the French Mastiff.

About 20 million home viewers are expected to watch the televised show, including one very high-profile family: the Obamas.

The president-elect has promised his two young daughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, a new first dog for the White House, but they have yet to decide on a breed.

"The entire dog world is waiting to see the choice that's made, so it would not surprise me if they are watching," said dog show host and former "Seinfeld" actor John O'Hurley.

The results of various online polls from local New York City animal shelters and one sponsored by the American Kennel Club in which more than 42,000 people voted show that the majority of Americans think the Obama family should opt for a Standard Poodle.

By the AKC's count, 22 of the nation's 43 presidents have owned purebred dogs. And if the Obamas tune to the National Dog Show, they'll have plenty of purebreds to choose from – plus, they'll have a great view.

Thursday's pack of fierce four-legged competitors will be broadcast in high-definition, so your living room couch is likely a better spot to tune in than even the ringside seats.

The No. 2 and No. 3 ranked dogs in the nation will compete in the show. Occasionally its results foreshadow the outcome of the prestigious Westminster show, held each February in New York City. Three years ago, the bull terrier Rufus took Best in Show in both competitions.

And just one more reason to check out the parade of canine contenders: Last year's Westminster winner Uno the Beagle is set to come out of retirement for a celebrity appearance.
