Students Recreate Macy’s Parade

WHEELING - For many, thoughts of Thanksgiving bring about vivid images of turkey, football, after-holiday sales and watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Because of this reason, students at Bridge Street Middle School reenacted their own version of the historic parade on Wednesday.

Tying together a variety of educational components from social studies to math, the sixth grade class at Bridge Street researched the background of the parade. For the past few days they began to create their own "floats" from art supplies and balloons.

"This was a sixth grade team effort," said Heather Vickers, teacher. "The concept was to have a cross-curriculum activity that covers language arts, social studies, science and math, as well as art. We wanted to give them an opportunity to design their own parade balloon."

Gathered in the school gym on Wednesday before Thanksgiving break, the students munched on hot popcorn as different groups of students paraded through the gym with their creations. The balloon designs ranged from turkeys to the face of Santa Claus. There were a total of 29 different balloons that were judged by the students for a variety of awards.

"All of the students worked together to solve problems and be creative," Vickers said. "This was an opportunity to learn how the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade works and to have a fun learning experience."

For 80 years, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has kicked off the holiday season with bands, balloons and floats in New York City.
