The New York Times also has a great interactive feature that breaks down food stamp usage by county across the US. Leading the race for highest number of people on food stamps are Hidalgo County, Texas and The Bronx, NY.
What's your county look like? Have you been on food stamps during the recession? Tell us on The Real Recovery.

Still think America can "come back?"
We're subsidizing our own failure in this country. None of these kids should need food stamps if we were even remotely prosperous.
America is not on the decline, America is not dying.
America is DEAD.
When practically no one in the country owns their own homes, when about a 1/3 of the country is living at or below the poverty level, when the national (private and public) debt is five times actual currency levels, when we need to receive aid from Cuba during a crisis, we're dead.
Now we're rotting, we can't even feed the hungry anymore. Pretty soon America is going to need the aid it's been overseas for years.
Speaking of overseas, that's where all this country's wealth went if you're wondering why none of these problems seem to be getting fixed. With the help of old Ronnie corporations shipped everything overseas and encouraged you to buy their useless shit until we all ran out of money.
We're going the way of the Soviet Union folks, and no leadership in Washington can fix the fact that we're a bunch of poor dumbasses who don't make anything anymore.
Of course, what Washington could do is start protectionism back up and encourage a strong local economy, but don't count on that.

Not enough of a tragedy...
Let's make it worst !
WAR
Most Victims are ChildrenAs wars have developed in the twentieth century, the ratio of civilian deaths to military deaths has changed radically. One hundred years ago 5% of war casualties were civilians. In World War I civilian deaths were about 10%. In World War II, 65%. Tactics of modern wars have shifted casualties to 90% civilians. More than half of these civilian casualties are children less than 14 years of age.
This is only the direct casualties from bombs, bullets and landmines. Add to this indirect and long-term casualties caused by destroyed infrastructure and a fractured society. resulting in disease, starvation, homelessness and the numbers become even more grim. On top of this add the long term effects of highly toxic armaments rained down upon the victim country – Agent Orange in Viet Nam, Depleted Uranium in Yugoslavia, Iraq and Afghanistan – and the result is generations of suffering borne by civilians, mostly children.
http://www.questionwar.com/children.html
http://www.nomorevictims.org/One of the most barbaric and shameful acts of our government is the use by our military of cluster bombs, those packages of brightly colored mini explosives (often made to resemble toys or food packets) that are scattered by the dozens upon contact with the ground where they patiently wait to be picked up by curious civilians (usually children). The result is the loss of limbs, eyes, major injury and often death to the unfortunate and unsuspecting victims. There is no doubt as to the suffering and mayhem these devices are intended to cause.
& then there's the WAR CHILD
http://www.warchild.org/"War, we must realize, is the massive and indiscriminate killing of human beings. War, is always fundamentally a war against children. And therefore, whatever just cause is presented to us, whether true or invented, whatever words are thrown at us about fighting for liberty or democracy or against tyranny, we must reject war as a solution." -- Howard Zinn
"I hated my part in the charade of murder and horror. My efforts were contributing to the deaths, to the burning alive of children - especially the children. The photographs of young Vietnamese children burned by napalm destroyed me." : Ralph McGehee former CIA intelligence analyst
“What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or in the holy name of liberty and democracy ? ” - Gandhi
"The sugar coated bullets of the "free market" are killing our children. The act to kill is unpremeditated. It is instrumented in a detached fashion through computer program trading on the New York and Chicago mercantile exchanges, where the global prices of rice, wheat and corn are decided upon." – Michel Chossudovsky
“Strike against war, for without you no battles can be fought! Strike against manufacturing shrapnel and gas bombs and all other tools of murder! Strike against preparedness that means death and misery to millions of human beings! Be not dumb, obedient slaves in an army of destruction! Be heroes in an army of construction !” - Helen Keller

I know first hand how stressful it can be when you can't afford to buy groceries. But there is a good percentage of the people who use these services (food stamps) who are just mooching off the system.
I use food stamps. I get $200 monthly so that I can buy groceries and still afford basic services (mortgage, electric, water, etc.). But I can't tell you how many times I've met people at DES (they control the food stamp program here) who are just mooching off the system. These people may or may not have a job, but they still spend money wastefully! Before getting food stamps I gave up all my luxuries: movies, cable, high end clothing, CD's, etc. I couldn't give up my net, but I'm now on my providers lowest tier. These people at the DES office still have all of these services and more! I met one lady who had 4 kids, a part time job, all of the luxury services i gave up, and she would go to the salon twice a month to get her nails done for $45 each time!
Now I know there are those, who like me, are just down on their luck and really need programs like these. But from my experiences, they are not the majority! I think if the DES offices started weeding out all of these moochers, you would have a much lower percentage of people who are truly in need. If you have money for life's luxuries, you don't need help paying for groceries, you need help budgeting!

Even if a billion people mooch off the system it does not make up for the super rich 5% who control 90% of the money and resources on the planet. So 5 billion of us have to fight over the 10% thats left like roaches.

Even with this news, Oprah needs to have a $50 Million dollar home. I know Oprah is not the cause for all the kids in the US on food stamps. But when are the super rich going to really help?
Lebron James was worth $270 Million as of last year. Where is the so called "King" of basketball when you need him??
Derek Jeter of the NY Yankees, as of last year, worth $125 Million dollars. Where's his charity??
Or how about the voice of the Republicans? Rush Limbaugh who is close to, or just over the billionaire net worth mark... so why isn't he helping his own people? I can imagine there are a few million redneck followers that need his help... so, where is he???
Again, before you start defending your "idols" remember that I'm not blaming them for the kids that are on food stamps, I'm asking why, with all the money that they have... are we still looking up to them and spending our money on people who only give to show face?
Also, did any of you know that if all the rich people in NY alone... think about this.... gave half of their wealth, this country wouldn't have any poor people?? and yet, a ton of people are walking around with their new iPhone like nothing is wrong...

last week it was reported that the apples growers of this country found it was cheaper to let the apples rot on the grown than to pick and sell them. A record number of apples have been harvest already and the selling price is too low. Would not it be cheaper yet to get some of the men at a local prison to come out and pick the apples for themselves and to the local food banks. Or would that rob the apple growers money they would of made at the local stores.

The point I've been trying to make for months and months.
Actually, if you think about it, we are quite socialistic compared to many of the latin american countries (or africa). Free police, social security, medicare, tons of infrastructure, etc etc.
However, we still have a LONG way to go in recognizing which industries should be privatized and government owned.

Food cost so much especially when buying REAL food. One grocery bag of healthy food can cost as much as a shopping cart of phony crap passed off as food. Food/diet equals our health and in turn effects our country. I would rather see tax dollars go toward people needing food then to our blotted war machine. The banks/credit card companies and insurance companies gets trillions in tax dollars and Washington acts as if it's a noble cause. Maybe the robber barons that got bailed out should have been made to stand in line to get food stamps.

So 1 in 4 children and the other study says 1 in 8 adults, so can we infer that it is people who have kids who are likely to get these subsidies?
Just another reason to require liscensure to be a parent.

Decent point, however, having a kid is an inherent, MAJOR cost of living. I am a single guy and am just a meager wage away from not needing food stamps. If I had a kid, that would DEFINITELY not be the case.

And those are the lucky ones. thousands of children die daily across the globe because of poverty so the super rich can stay rich.

When you read the original NY Times article it seems like the people they feature in the story should have spent less time popping out children and more time getting an education. I'm really not a fan of helping someone feed their 7 children. If you don't have the money don't have so many fucking kids!

Look at those who recieve it though they are often Dem leaning. Maybe it takes seeing people living off the system everyday to make some people believe in getting rid of it so strongly. If you had to drive by a bunch of grown adults drinking beer on their porches while you drive to you second job, you would be pissed too.
A lot of the people in those areas that get welfare don't vote, if they don't have enough motivation to try and find a job why on earth should they go vote. To many 4th and 5th generation welfare recipients who just live off the system.

evoleon, the point that was made is that the majority of states recieveing most of the food stamps are NOT Democratic leaning states but Republican leaning states. If you look you'll see that the bluest areas are in the south and southwest in states that are, on the outside, anti-government and predominantly Republican, yet those are the ones sucking up all your tax dollars. Conversely some of the most liberal states like Massachusetts use the least. You need to rethink your opinions.

No you didn't read my post, I said that most commonly what makes people against welfare is the constant abuse and misuse by large groups of people. Now those who on welfare often do not vote. Thus a majority of those who have to see the abuse, vote. Now do you see what I'm saying. Not every person votes.
Welfare recipients = Dem leaning to expand their benefits
Working class = Rep leaning as to stop abuse and limit amount taxed
Now I would much rather have money going to people than the "war budget" but honestly we have produced and entire segment of the population that is now living off of welfare, generation by generation. They have little initiative to do anything besides produce babies to increase their monthly benefits.

look at that map. you can't help but notice that the red states that hate that "big gov't" stuff like welfare and food stamps, are also the very same populations that are collecting on those liberal programs. when are people going to wake up. republican morons that denounce big goverment without realizing that they lean on the gov't more than most others do. california and the northeast (blue state locales) are the least blue. while appalachia , dixie, and the southwest are the bluest on the most.

Exactly diabolical, I've never been sure what people are talking about when they say that the least-educated, poorest areas are liberal, yet it is a common statement many of the more ignorant conservatives make where I live. Without the assistance of government there would be a big starvation problem in the South and other rural parts of the country more so than the liberal parts.
