Solar Back Up Generators

This is an interesting product.....

Some of its features, more information at link on web site...

"3)Portable Power - If the going ever gets too tough where you are and you decide to “get the heck out of dodge,” you simply throw it in the car and take off to a safer destination, knowing you have power wherever you go.

4)Replaces gas generators - No noise, no fumes, no maintenance and most importantly… no fuel required. Simply roll it to whatever location needs the power and start plugging in appliances. It has a massive maintenance-free battery as well as an indestructible outer case. (It weighs about 65 pounds.) It’s a solid piece of equipment that will last a lifetime

5)Generates permanent power - The unit provides 1800 watts of electricity at peak power. That’s enough to run many appliances in your house. The unit stores power and makes it available when you need it. The generator is recharged constantly by the sun allowing you to use the system and charging it at the same time. Many users choose to keep appliances plugged in permanently to reduce electrical costs and help pay for the unit

6)Multiple uses - You can use your solar backup to run essential appliances when emergencies arise. You can recharge phones; run shortwave radios, televisions, lights, fire place or furnace fans, as well as computers and printers. Plus, if you need to work in the woods at the cabin or in a boat, you can use the solar backup to run power tools, trimmers, blowers and coffee makers.

7)Plug and play means instant power - The emergency backup system comes ready to go. Just start plugging in your favorite household essentials..."

    • Interesting. The price is not as painful as I expected. It is three times what I paid for my gas-burning generator that puts out roughly the same amount of energy. But I purchased that generator 9 years ago, and it is not only a pain to maintain (maybe that is true for all generators, though, if you want to ensure they are ready to go on zero notice) but it is also so loud you can hardly stand to be within 100 feet of it. If you are going to take it out to the woods and use it to survive, I would strongly recommend baggin a deer or two before you fire it up because there won't be a deer within five miles fifteen minutes afterwards.

Thanks for the info -- I am going to take a look. 10 years is about right to replace something that can mean life-or-death out here in "blizzard land."

    • A company in Texas has an Ultra Capacitor that they will begin marketing that has enough power to run an electric vehicle. It stores power like a battery.

    • I think this would be great, I am excited to see things like this coming down the pike. I wrote a blog after a bad ice storm that knocked out all of the power in huge portions of N/W Arkansas, in that blog, I asked why not rebuild or repair the damage this storm had done with solar power, so next time (and there will be a next time) you won't have to go weeks without power? Maybe this would be a foot in the door. I hope so! Thanks!

    • This looks good, but according to how many and what size solar panels are needed for that much power output, something here doesn't add up. Looking at the size and weight of this piece of equipment, either it takes a long time to store that much power or the power doesn't last all that long, unless it is attached to a much larger solar array...

Good idea, though... I'm sure it will be greatly improved upon, as time unfolds...

A friend of mine just ordered one, so I will let you know (with feedback from my tech savvy husband) how it looks and works when they have set it up - the site also uses "fear" to promote the product (pity good products can't just stand on their own positive attributes without the "fear of lack" marketing ploy), but with that aside, the idea of the portable solar back up is an obvious and excellent one.
