US stocks crept up on Thursday and were set to break a four-day losing streak, as investors weighed up positive news from the retail sector.
By mid-afternoon, the S&P 500 was up 0.4 per cent at 998.60, while the Nasdaq was up 0.4 per cent at 1,975.35. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also rose 0.3 per cent to 9,303.84.
The major indices initially opened higher – following strong gains in China – and global markets looked set to stabilize after this week’s falls.
Positive news from the retail sector on August sales, and data from the services industry helped to lift the market but uncertainty lingered in early trading, with investors wary ahead of today’s employment report for August.
