The average age when youth first try alcohol is 11 years for boys and 13 years for girls. The average age which Americans begin drinking regularly is 15.9 years old.

According to research by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, adolescents who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who begin drinking at age 21.

Three out of every four students (75%) have consumed alcohol (more than just a few sips) by the end of high school.

The three leading causes of death for 15 - 24 year olds are automobile crashes, homicides and suicides. Alcohol is a leading factor in all three. Teenage drunk driving is responsible for about one in every four motor vehicle accidents. These types of mishaps are the number one killer among 15 - 20 year olds.

Young drinking drivers are involved in fatal crashes at twice the rate of drivers aged 21 and older. But....a child who reaches age 21 without smoking, abusing alcohol or using drugs is virtually certain never to do so.
