People need to get over talking about this. Sure, people like the way fixies look and ride them without actually knowing how, but who cares? People do all kinds of things for reasons more ridiculous than that.
Advantages:
- simplicity: less parts to fix, less likely to be stolen since not everyone can ride one, and there is a certain charm to having an anachronistic design (fixed-gears came before free wheels)
- weather: if you actually know how to stop on a track bike, they're much better in wet weather than hand brakes
- speed: you're much faster on a mostly level surface than a freewheel, hence the term "track bike"
