I'm a terrorist for suggesting that killing at all is bad? wow... to me thats typical brainwashee syndrome... did you ever take a second to think about what the world would be like if absolutely no one killed anyone? killing is not a good thing, it never has been. why are the people who go into the services paid so poorly? why? because the government or whoever wants their wars fighting for them wont do it themselves, so they herd young people into the army, so that they can get killed instead. you really should take a look at whats really going on in this day and age, really. thanks for praying death on me, its appreciated, your clearly not a nice person (i pray you realise what you have just said) no one is evil, we are just tricked into being evil. I've had to reply like this so many times not just on current, because people like you think that abuse will solve a dispute, sorry hun, your wrong.

I would be very careful with throwing around the "Domestic Terrorist" label, especially as our current regime has recently used it to describe "Conservative War Veterans" who might resist the will of the God-Emperor. One of the main principles of counterinsurgency, which we sadly failed to grasp for so long, is that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.
Also, your responses are not very clear... and pretty ignorant... I don't even know why I'm responding really.
Dameaux,
If you'd really like to know why the pay is so low for our men and women who serve, why don't you ask the liberal politicians who are always in favor of cutting the Defense budget?
You will say that not every dollar goes towards a pay increase, but I will pre-empt that by saying that every dollar that doesn't goes towards improving the safety, readiness, and standard of living for people in uniform.
Also, the whole killing=bad, war=bad, is so typical of the child-like mentality of a liberal... I don't even know how to respond.
Sorry we don't live in Candyland, I suppose? Does that work?
Maybe the next time we're attacked (and there WILL be a next time) instead of retaliating we can send cupcakes?

Wow... it's amazing to see what the Army was like when standards and discipline were still enforced.
To the posters above- It's a simple fact that the Army is not a welfare organization, and was not designed to provide a livelihood for useless, undereducated people. The Army exists to fight and win our nation's wars. Period.
The old "Pickle Suit" Army is so vastly different from today's force... it's amazing. We've changed so much since the old "Shiny Boots" days- in some ways for the better, some for the worse.
I would like to see the whole movie someday, and was very interested to read above that they spoke candidly with the DS. I wonder if they shot any footage of successful soldiers rising to meet the challenges of the day and realizing that they were, mentally and physically, so much more than they had imagined.
From just watching the clip above though, it seems that it is most likely a leftist propaganda piece...

And yet those are the people they try to recruit. Huh. And the army IS for "undereducated" people as you put it (ie poor). If they weren't they'd be doctors and lawyers.
Why don't you go play war some more instead of posting on here, since just from reading your comment, it seems that it is most likely a rightist propaganda piece...

KalashniKEV:
Ayashe,
Your comment reveals your ignorance... if you knew anything about the United States Army you would know that there ARE doctors and lawyers in uniform who are serving proudly each and every day.
The recruits coming into today's military aren't any different from those of the "Greatest Generation." They are still the same brave young men and women who are willing to raise their hand and swear an oath to be a part of something great, to make history, and to challenge themselves to realize their maximum potential.
What IS different is how the Army treats them once they are in. I would hope that today's Drill Sergeants would enforce the same standard, but sadly I believe that they do not... and consequently fail the Soldiers.
Lastly, I would challenge you to come up with something more constructive and intelligent in your future posts. Current isn't just for lefties who can't tolerate other viewpoints or who are unwilling to square up with reality.

Nancy, you don't make sense.
KalashniKEV, sadly you are correct that the DS don't always enforce the same standards and therefore fail the soldiers. I feel however that it's not necessarily the DS's fault, but rather the rushed schedule that is forced upon them. Granted, when I went through we were 2 weeks behind the rest of the battalion but still.

I downloaded the film from itunes because I was in basic training at the same time as the movie was being shot (i remember the film crew being around). At the time, Iran was holding US civilains hostage - so that explains the anit-Iran sentiment. The girls who were running and singing were in my company (not Johnson's) and I knew a lot of them. Let me tell you, not one of them was a killing machine. They were all young (all of us were 18, 19, 20 or so) and a lot were just plain silly. One of them in the front of the line got pregnant by our first sergeant and we never saw either of them again. They sang the song because that's what the sergeant wanted them to sing. WE ALL just sat there and listened to the drill sergeants go on and on. Believe it or not, killing people was the last thing I was thinking about when I signed up -and I'm sure a lot of other peopler felt the same way. We were bored with not many options in life (of 200 or so people in my company, only a handful had high school diplomas).

Wow, what a powerful short set of clips. I would like to see the entire film in its entirety one day. Johnson seems like a girl torn between the army and no options...and the other women there seemed to at least take her side for the most part.
The dynamic between the Sergeant and Johnson is troubling, but I think it typifies what happens in the these situations.
I love her grin, though.

Yeah that whole "Marines are tougher" thing doesn't really apply here. If she wasn't going to make it will drill sergeants in her face in the marines, she wasn't going to make it in the army. Don't discredit the army.

I recall seeing this full film in a social psychology course when I was an undergraduate in the 1980's. After prvt Johnson leaves, the filmmakers interview the drill sergeant who admits that the Army had hardened him to the point of feeling nothing on the recent passing of his mother

The Iran hostage crisis was a diplomatic crisis between Iran and the United States where 52 U.S. diplomats were held hostage for 444 days from November 4, 1979 to January 20, 1981, after a group of Islamist students took over the American embassy in support of the Iranian revolution.
Soldier Girls is a 1981 documentary.
