Twilight: Abstinence Porn

"The Twilight series has created a surprising new sub-genre of teen romance: It’s abstinence porn, sensational, erotic, and titillating. And in light of all the recent real-world attention on abstinence-only education, it’s surprising how successful this new genre is. Twilight actually convinces us that self-denial is hot. Fan reaction suggests that in the beginning, Edward and Bella’s chaste but sexually charged relationship was steamy precisely because it was unconsummated—kind of like Cheers, but with fangs. Despite all the hot “virtue,” however, we feminist readers have to ask ourselves if abstinence porn is as uplifting as some of its proponents seem to believe."

We all knew that the Twilight Series was a fetishized version of Mormonism, but the real issue here is sexualizing NOT having sex. Is it healthier for kids ot get off on...not getting off?

    • It's stephenie meyer's version of romance. If I wrote a romance novel it'd be stark and depressing. Always remember that it's a Romance Novel. It's meant to be over the top.

    • Her books live off the of the readers' own imaginations. She purposefully does not write in the explicit scenes, telling readers to create their won. Apparently, teens like to fantasize more than to read about it. :)

    • Twilight was worthwhile and I'm getting around to reading new moon before the film opens. But Twilight was a dissapointing, there should be a new Bella and a new Director.

I watched the movie before I read the books (it was the catalyst). Because I watched the movie first, I was able to read more into the books. I think the books are great, but Meyer's writing style is very simple, a high school Freshman level reading material. The actors in the movie adds more personality to Meyer's characters, I think. To be honest, I don't really think Bella's character is developed enough in the books, but Stewart's acting persona added more to Bella's character through the movie.

    • St Alia, you are one busy girl! I read all four Twilight books over the last month, and I disagree that it's all about abstinence, at least for me. Rather, it's about the enduring, undying love that every woman longs for. We want Edward and Bella to survive every challenge to their relationship, and they do. Other love stories that are great without sex (or at least they're great before sex) are Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, and various movies including Bridges of Madison County, You've Got Mail, When Harry Met Sally, and Never Been Kissed. There are many others; these are just a few of my favorites. Oh, and by the way, it doesn't hurt that Edwqard Cullen is incredibly chivalrous, loyal, strong and oh yeah, gorgeous.
