How does a girl from Watertown become the muse to sci-fi guru Joss Whedon?
“I literally remember when I made my audition tape for ‘Buffy (the Vampire Slayer).’ I went to the Arsenal Mall and got my outfit at Contempo Casuals and . . . put some safety pins in my jeans,” said local gal Eliza Dushku, star of Whedon’s latest creation, “Dollhouse,” Friday at 9 p.m. on WFXT (Ch. 25).
Since that 1997 audition, Dushku has blossomed from fringe character to series star with Whedon’s help.
“I would say, first and foremost, that I just love the guy as a friend,” the 28-year-old actress said during a recent conference call with reporters.
“He’s been a friend, a brother, a teacher, a mentor - but the other obviously is just his talent. His skill is so beautiful to me, and he’s just wildly creative and smart and feminist and funny and dark and scary and twisted, and he just combines it all so, you know, in such a sweet little package that he gets me every time.”
These qualities are all elements of Dushku’s character Echo, an operative whose mind is wiped clean so she can assume the persona requested by the person who hires her.
“She’s full-on schizophrenic,” said Dushku, who also serves as producer for the show.
Among the roles Echo has adopted: blind woman, assassin and, most recently, a mother.
“Playing a mother was something I hadn’t expected. I’m an auntie and I’ve always loved other people’s children, but tapping into that maternal instinct was definitely a challenge. Mother was harder than serial killer sorority girl,” Dushku said.
This season Echo will begin searching for her true identity, which Dushku said is a treat for her to explore.

I began to kinda liked it, too. I was just wondering where it was gonna go. Too bad we won't find out. Alias is the fate of Joss' projects.
