For most grandparents, celebrating their grandchild's first birthday is a joyous occasion; but for a McKeesport man, the day will be bittersweet. It's also the first anniversary of his daughter's death.
Kia Johnson, 18, died last July when police say a Wilkinsburg woman cut the baby from her womb.
"Kia never came home and then I got a call from the coroner saying, my daughter's down there," Eric Johnson, Kia's father, tells KDKA-TV.
Andrea Curry-Demus, 40, is being held in a state mental hospital until a judge decides if she's competent to stand trial.
Investigators say Curry-Demus killed Johnson, cut her unborn baby from her womb, and kidnapped the newborn. They say she then took the baby to a hospital and claimed that she had just given birth to him.
Johnson has been raising the little boy ever since; and Terrell Kian Johnson will turn one-year-old today.
"I look his face and I see my daughter Kia," he said.
While Eric Johnson says he's planning a party for his grandson's big day, it's not going to be easy.
"I know she's up there watching now - I know she is," Johnson said of his slain daughter.
While Johnson waits for justice for his daughter, he said he's trying to focus on his grandson, named after Kia and the baby's father, who is serving a five- to 10-year sentence for robbery.
Kia's ashes rest in a butterfly covered urn on the mantel in the room where her son plays with his grandfather.
"But she's with me I carry her everyday in my angel," Johnson said.

So many twisted minds, much to often exonerated by even weaker minds. Moral clarity is rapidly vanishing.

amazing what people will do.
it's obviously a tragedy for her family, but I have to wonder why girls end up hanging out with guys who have gone to jail, why they meet up with and then spend time with other people who are in a similar situation...it seems to me you need to put distance between yourself and anyone who has a criminal record or has committed a crime and is incarcerated, and NEVER spend time around others like that. "You lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas" is the addage my parents taught me.
this poor girl hung out with questionable people and ended up dead because of it.
that poor kid...both of them, the momma and the baby, how sad. - 2 years ago

They will probably keep the murderer in the mental hospital for another six years and then release her saying, she is cured.
We all know what will happen the day after she gets out,
she will look for someone who is pregnant and decide that is an easy way to get a baby.
OMG! What a justice system we have!
May Kia rest in peace with God as her Friend. - 2 years ago
