Here's an excellent way to sharpen your bicycling skills. David Henderson, the bicycle-pedestrian coordinator for Miami-Dade County, will lead an all-day workshop, Traffic Skills for Bicyclists, on Friday, November 7. David describes the course:

Become a safer and more confident bicyclist by learning how to drive your bike correctly. This class covers traffic laws, bike equipment and other gear, fixing a flat, injury prevention, accident prevention, on-bike skills practice and a group ride. Student manual included! Recommended for adults and children over 14 years.

This course used to be called Road 1, which made sense if you thought about touring but doesn't quite connect to our urban environment. It is an excellent class. If you complete it you will ride safer and with more confidence. Other details:

* It costs $25.
* Runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 9
* At Crandon Park Nature Center, Key Biscayne
* To register, phone David Henderson at 305-375-1647 or send him e-mail at davidh@miamidade.gov.
* You'll need your bicycle, helmet, sunglasses, water, lunch or lunch money -- and comfortable clothes for on-bike practice and the group ride.

David, incidentally, is president of the Florida Bicycle Association and certified as an instructor by the League of American Bicyclists.

    • i think these classes should be offered for free as an incentive to those who are helping to manage our carbon fingerprints. Or have the major oil companies pay for these classes. im not payin for it.
