What I think is, it's easy to make comments like this right after something has happened but then you run the danger of politicizing it. I feel like that's the last thing on the victims' minds right now you know? Thats why its so hard to wrap my head around it.I just know it's sad. :(

Amendment II, of the United States Constitution: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Well, does that clear things up??
not really.

I'm tired of hearing about all these murders and shootings with guns.Everyday, there's some shooting news story on the news.. I understand the "right to bear arms" but in the US it is out of control. What's so different about the US than other countries who don't have a problem with guns?

well most people in canada carry weapons and yet their crime rate is way lower than ours. I think its the fact that its so hard for us to obtain weapons legally and so easy to get them illegally, and the fact that our population is more focused into localized areas.

An apathetic and depressed country, overly-medicated with no real social services or competent educational system is the problem at hand here, not the gun.
If our social welfare and mental health system was a manager, I'd report him to HR.

All the reasons people will offer for events such as these are only symptoms of the problem, not the problem.
These events will continue to happen and they will happen more frequently. If you ban guns, people will just get them illegally.
Our very culture, our society itself, is what has created this mess. It is a model for human existence we have been trying for ten thousand years, and it DOESN'T WORK.
Yet we cling to it, refuse to admit we may be wrong, and it will be much much worse now before it can ever get better. So stop acting all shocked when you see headlines like this, and start looking for answers as to 'why' that aren't just other symptoms of the issue.

Face it, hand guns are meant to kill people. I can protect my home or hunt wildlife with a rifle or shot gun. Those are pretty hard to hide in your pocket even sawed off and modified. I don't need an uzi to protect myself either. If I did it wouldn't do me much good because I'd prolly get blasted by a missile. I want a tank.

Ah yeah....a TANK...run those suckers over. Some weapons should be limited to certain areas where they are more viable and most are not in citizens hands. Especially crazed ones, let alone how reasonable it would be to state that about governments and weapons.

I knew that Marilynn. ;-) Mine was too. Though proves a point. Even without legal access to a Tank, a criminal can still get his hands on one. Something to consider. Drugs are illegal. And yet people gain access to them. I agree that a ban on guns would likely decrease gun crime, but at what cost to the constitution and the meaning and reasoning behind the 2nd amendment. It will be interesting to hear what the Supreme Court says today about the hand gun ban in DC.

in science you compare things that are similar. If America was to model itself after another country (seeing how that's the sole reason it broke away from one) that other country would have to be similar enough to America for it to be worth modeling.
Otherwise it's like asking a cat to model itself after a whale. It just doesn't work that way.

You round up all those that have illegal fire arms. You take all the ones that are in jail for having them. You put them in a big fat arena and you let them shoot each other to death. The last one standing gets to bask in the bloody aftermath. Then there will be a lion, a tiger and a bear released to attack them. Should this lone gunman survive those three they will have to go without food for 5 days and water 7 and if they are still alive all those who are family members of the ones that were slaughtered in this Roman like entertainment will throw rocks at him (or her) until they die.
It will be a reality show called Justice Beyond the Second Amendment.

Ask the criminals in the UK that own firearms. You can easily see that the ban on gun ownership there doesn't change a thing. It's not going to change criminal activity. Again, our founding fathers put this in the constitution to protect us from a tyrannical govt. I personally don't own a firearm, but I value the right to own one. I would agree with Carolyn below that this isn't a black and white issue. Their are many shades of grey. But to say that criminal activity should take the right to bear arms away from honest, upstanding, and responsible americans, is foolish in my opinion. Most criminal activity, outside of our current administration/government, seems to occur mostly in poverty stricken and uneducated areas of society. Where opportunities are lessened and the local economy is weakened. Drug activity alone is related to more gun violence than anything else. What if we legalized drugs, tax them and gave the money back to the economy? I don't have all of the answers. But given the state of this country and our government, and the potential for Marshal Law, I am considering buying a gun so that I can protect my loved ones from anything and anyone. Including the very criminals that already have them, and will continue to have them despite the laws.

This isnt a b/w issue for me ither but lets look at this. This 1 man, a gun owner/possessor, has killed 5 people including himself. If there were a ban on hand gun ownership then these people may have not died. Taking into account the 178,877 gun deaths between 2000 and 2005 (Via CDC) and everything from 2005 to the present, thats a lot of people, that would still be alive, alot of brothers and sisters and mothers and fathers who would be around to care for their children and loved ones, these victims who died unnecessarily.
Simply because our government is unable to let go of a well intentioned and out dated protection.J_Jammer... so much for cruel and unusual.

Ironically, the Supreme Court is to announce their decision today on banning hand guns in DC.
So one guy goes nuts and it's gonna be all over the press. Meanwhile their are millions of Americans that practice their 2nd amendment right with no incident.

I agree on that point. The citizens need to have a way to protect themselves from a rogue despotic government in being able to form a militia. That is the real meaning of the 2nd amendment... not the way it has been warped by organzations like the NRA. No one should have the ability to just walk around with an uzi to point it in my face just for the hell of it. We need to have the 2nd amendment but we need to enforce it.

How did this get to be number one so fast? So the other stories get pushed down now after sitting here for all this time just to push this up? Not saying this isn't important, but perhaps a breaking news banner at the top of the page would be good to post breaking news that does not interfere with the flow of the rest of the stories?
But I suppose we will hear from both of our illustrious candidates today on this now to use it to pander as well...
