COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, still clinging to office after admitting to an extramarital affair, wrote in an opinion piece released Sunday that God will change him so he can emerge from the scandal a more humble and effective leader.

"(W)hile none of us has the chance to attend our own funeral, in many ways I feel like I was at my own in the past weeks, and surprisingly I am thankful for the perspective it has afforded," Sanford wrote in the opinion piece widely published online Sunday by South Carolina newspapers.

Sanford, a two-term Republican, returned from a mysterious, nearly weeklong disappearance last month to reveal a romance with a longtime friend in Argentina. In a series of Associated Press interviews, he described the woman as his "soul mate" but said he would work to repair his relationship with his wife, Jenny, the mother of their four sons.

Some lawmakers have called for Sanford to resign, and one state senator plans hearings on whether state money was used to facilitate the trysts. A criminal probe found nothing illegal.

Sanford and his wife left the state earlier this week for an undisclosed location and are expected to return Sunday evening, spokesman Joel Sawyer said.

In the opinion, Sanford vows to work with lawmakers he's long fought and cites scripture and his faith in God — just as he's done in his few public appearances since admitting the affair.

"It's in the spirit of making good from bad that I am committing to you and the larger family of South Carolinians to use this experience to both trust God in his larger work of changing me, and from my end, to work to becoming a better and more effective leader," he wrote.

    • WE the People, should care because our supposed leaders tell us one thing and do another. That isn't a good leadership quality. Their personal affairs are of no concern - unless they hold up the sanctity of their life styles as shining example of how the rest of us should live. You can't tell me to save myself for marriage and then only honor my spouse while simultaneously getting your own skeeze on and laughing all the way to public office.

    • I absolutely hate the flurry of media attracted to the infidelities of our leaders and politicians. Are these stories supposed to tell us more about them? Is it supposed to assist the governmental process? Why should we care?

Who cares if he wants God to make him a better man? Why are all our politicians nothing but celebrities now, because that's certainly how we treat them. All of this is irrelevant.

    • He probably doesn't even believe what he is saying but he knows that there are enough bible thumpin conservatives to keep him alive politically if he can convince them that he does. Basically, if he doesn't "turn to God" any chance at a political career in the GOP is over.

Bingo. I don't think enough people actually realize this. For evangelicals, getting into heaven only requires "accepting Jesus as you personal savior". It is about what you believe and has nothing to do with your actions. People should really stop and think about this and then be very very terrified by these inhuman monsters that roam among us. (Note: not all Christian sects believe this)

    • Way to give out that B.S. to those ignorant South Carolina voters! They will buy that crap and eat it up! This is the state that kept Strom Thurmond in the Senate for 46 years after he was governor.
Can we sell certain states to China to pay off our debt? If so, this one goes first.

    • God wil change him. I will ask the same question as everyone else- Into what?? A Democrat, man who takes responsibiity for his actions, someone who has balls and tells the truth ... What??

I am tired of people using or blaming God and by proxy the devil for their actions. He made the choice, let him right the ship.
Please , i guess God only listens to Republicans

Naw, if he'd of been a Democrat, he would of gotten the girlfriend pregnant, drove his car in a river while drunk, let her drown, and wait 12 hours to tell the police.
Then get re-elected to about 20 more terms.

    • Even if I believed in God I wouldn't think God would "fix" anyone. You have to change yourself, you have to work towards the person you want to become. God is not there to patch up your douchebaggery; take responsibility for your own life and actions!

    • Hopefully in a way that let's him embrace his humanity and if his wife stopped really having sex with him, probably years ago, this Argentinean Lady is his saviour. There are lots of sexless and loveless marriages out there and politicians have the highest per capita I imagine. They are soulless for the most part but do very human things. The laws he stands for expect us to be more than human.

    • Looks like he's giving off some kind of secret society sign with his fingers crossed, rubbing his eyes.

I've never seen anybody wipe their eyes like that. Never.

Try wiping your eyes with your fingers crossed like that and see just how awkward it is.

Paranoia is a mother fucker huh? For all the weird stuff I've seen people do, out of plain nervousness, this isn't such of a sign, I do dumb shit like that all of time. I'm no advocate of the man, but the Masonic/Illuminati is just getting out of hand.

    • Is this all people do now days? Even though I'm an Atheist, wtf is up with people putting all their blames and problems on god now days. God this, god that, god, god, god, god, god,! I ran my car into a wall "God's going to fix it", I shot a man "God had a plan for me to shoot the man/ God works in mysterious ways"

I fell off of a cliff! "God"

Stop using god as an excuse, own up, and fix shit your damn self, piece of shit. I'm sure if you sit still and not eat, waiting for god to magically grant you some food, you'll starve to fucking death. I'm sure there are many homeless men on the street with faith in god to grant them a speck of food, which they will not get sitting around waiting for "god" to come and feed them.

The more I think, it seems that people think that they don't have their own minds, they seem to think that god controls them fully and their brain has no function but just to let the heart know when blood needs to pump and the lungs need to breathe. Own the fuck up.

Science proves that your brain controls your stupid ass task, consciously or subconsciously.

    • ZeldaMasterZapp:

Why is this surprising to you? The primary purpose of organized religion is to control people's behavior to produce an ordered society. The secondary purpose is to remove people's sense of responsibility for their own life and the fears and anxiety that are inherent in that. Religion is a cop out for the weak mind in a frightening and confusing world.

Jesus tried to teach the religious that God was within them and that they were called to love and help all others. He tried to teach them that it was up to them to learn tolerance and non-violence and self sacrifice. He was ignored. The Christians who carry his name make a mockery of his teachings.

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”
"Christianity is a wonderful idea. I wish someone would try it."
