WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham says he’ll vote for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor breaking with his party’s conservative leaders. The South Carolinian had hinted during Sotomayor’s confirmation hearings that he might back President Barack Obama’s first high court nominee.
His announcement brings the total number of Republicans publicly backing her to five. Graham is generally conservative but has been known to flash a
maverick streak similar to his mentor, Sen. John McCain of Arizona.
The other Republicans who’ve said they’ll vote for Sotomayor, who would be the first Hispanic justice, are all moderates. The 55-year-old appeals court judge is expected to win confirmation in early August.

I believe it was on the first day of the Sotomayor grill session (which was last week by the way) that I saw Graham 'interact' with her.
Although he did say he was going to vote for her, he was condescending and to put it plainly - a dick.
When he talked down to her and brought up her oh so famous 'Wise Latina' remark you know he was just doing it for show. He just wants to go back to his constituency and say, 'you folks see how I told it to her straight. I didn't just let her waltz into the Supreme Court.'
I doubt the guy really cares that much about her confirmation. As expected, he's just playing the partisan game that he has too.

As a citizen of South Carolina, I had the misfortune of watching Lindsey get reelected this year. Though I don't really have much of an opinion of Sotomayor because I haven't really been following, I will say this: Graham is at best a neoconservative. He got reelected because he was the incumbent and the voters down here didn't give his opponent a chance.
He's also permanently on my list after saying that Libertarians weren't welcome in the Republican Party. What a tool.

Graham is an odd duck.
His treatment of Sotomayor was patronizing and obnoxious.
It is certain he believes himself to be a man of integrity. He is quite smug.
Yet voting for confirmation, if one is at all objective, is a no brainer. He should not get brownie points for doing what is obviously the right thing to do.

For the record, she only said that a wise Latina woman would make better decisions with respect to issues that latina women face.
Here is the actual quote:
“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”
Her remarks came in the context of reflecting her own life experiences as a Hispanic female judge and on how the increasing diversity on the federal bench “will have an effect on the development of the law and on judging.”
Taking it out of context, (i.e. lopping off the last portion) is grossly unfair.
Frankly, it's a no-brainer: Having grown up in the circumstances she did, her experiences provide her with a perspective most (wealthy) white males lack. This is simply a fact of life; and reflects the changing diversity in this nation.
Please know it's not my point to prove you wrong, just to set the record straight.
Bottom line: Let's hope there is room enough for everyone on the bench. This is America after all.

Funny how everyone is saying she "did her job" by NOT being an activist Judge. Liberals have always told us that Judges were supposed to Judge and make decisions. I suppose that is only when it's acceptable to liberals. Oh and the Constitution is highest law in the land, and she routinely ignored it.
What if a White Man said a "wise White Man" could make better decisions? Hmmm. Or what if a White Man was on the board of the Arayan Movement or KKK? Hmmm. What if a White Man said the the Appeals court is where we "really make policy?" Would that White Man be acceptable? Hell no.
What hypocrites.
Now she gets to go to SCOTUS and be as activist as she wants. Don't you people understand that SCOTUS is NOT AN APPEALS COURT? Guess not.
She is NOT SCOTUS material. Ill tempered and lacking in intellectual ability, is she.
As for Lindsey Graham he is a gutless weenie who is playing the go along to get along game.

Codewizard,
So what examples can you give me to show that she has been an activist (by which I'm assuming you mean radical) judge?
Oh wait, there aren't any. You're just using inflammatory language and conservative talking points to try to convince others who are already sympathetic to your viewpoints that she is a bad choice.
What you say about Sotomayor and her track record of laying down the law don't match up at all.

Codewizard, You should stick to "Code". Beause, when it comes to the intricacies of American Politics you are laughably uninformed and far from a wiz.
FYI, the only court above the Appellate Court that Sotomayor served on is the Supreme Court. She has more experience than any Supreme Court nominee in the past 100 years. She has always ruled with the Juris Prudence and Presedence of the 3,000+ cases she has seen(non-activism). She is a very Conservative Judge.

He was a JAG officer. He knows how conservative and non-activist her record is.
