We live in a society of fear. Companies, organizations and politicians use fear to manipulate what we buy and how we vote. As Lipsyte put it, "We need to demand proof, not attitudes, explanations, not viewpoints, so we can brush off all the little phony fears that smother us and concentrate on staying aware of — rather than fearing — fear itself."
