Palestinian Reaction

ajbintl
6 months on the Palestinian reaction to the disengagement is still hard to quantify. Most everyday Palestinians are just looking for a better life. They've lived the last number of years in the midst of the Second Intifada and subsequent military occupation in the territories by Israeli forces trying to root out terrorism. Borders are arbitrarily closed, airstrikes happen, and checkpoints cause long wait. On the one hand, rightly so - dozens of suicide bombers were targeting Israeli civilians on buses, in restaurants, and crowded shopping malls - that is what causes harsh Israeli responses becuase rather than Palestinian militants targeting military or government installations they opt for causing civilian casualties. On the other hand, the headlines don't speak for the masses, only a fraction of the 3 million Palestinians living in harsh economic conditions are responsible for terror strikes. The bottom line is that Israelis deserve peace and securtiy they've long sought and Palestinians deserve freedom of movement and a leadership that clamps down on militant activity.

    • Great, well done piece.

I dont see it as biased, rather it shows something mainstream media does not. AJB is showing us a window, and we need to see all the different sides of this complex, emotional issue, regardless of the political views we hold.

    • I essentially agree with Dazz. At the same time, although I agree that the pieces definitely reveal an inherent bias, I don't think that striving for more balanced reporting is the solution. Let's face it, objectivity and unbiased reporting are myths and rarely obtained. It's like enlightenment for journalists, lots of people are focused on it but most are a long way from mastery.

I think with stories about such heavily charged issues as the Isreal and Palestine conflict, I more appropriate approach would have been to adopt a sort of naked journalisim approach and share with the viewer how YOU (AJB) feel about the conflict, I think it's important that you still try to capture both sides of the story but don't try to be objective. You've got strong feelings about this issue and it shows, be honest about that with us.

I think the problem with news today is not that it's biased. But that it's biased and pretends to be objective. Even without VO, the editing process is subjective and as such truly objective video journalism is a paradox that can only be unraveled by providing just the uncut rough footage as news -- which obviously makes no sense.

Anyhow AJB -- very well done. You've got skills, you've got balls, and you've got a voice. It'll take you places in the future and clearly already has. Congrats.

    • This is the other side of the story and welll told. Taken together AJB's work is extraordinary. No where else are you able to obtain this up to the minute, in-depth view of this highly volatile conflict.

    • I think it's great abj is filing from the Gaza strip. The material is well cut, compelling and told in a contemporary fashion. But the danger is that the reporting appears very biased. The Palestinians are portrayed as calculating, dangerous and unworthy recipients of the Gaza land. The Israelis on the other hand are victims giving away homes to potential terrorists. Perhaps more balance and less emotion would be appropriate for such a complex subject.
