Gender is not a static state of being.
Many of the documentaries I have seen about trans-folk tend to be very sterile. If my piece is successful, I hope that the viewer feels they have met someone that they can relate to. The social and political issues raised in this piece concern a lack of knowledge and respect for the welfare of a portion of our society in which gender is not a static state of being. Law enforcement and the medical community are insensitive, exploitative, and downright abusive to trans-folk.

    • I am so happy for you, especially that you could transition at such a young age. That option was not really available for me as a young person. The first 45 years of my life were, for the most part, hell. I had constant thoughts of suicide and developed severe depression. When I had nothing left to lose (I think they call that the bottom) I decided to die or change. I was lucky enough to change to the gender I have always felt inside. The last 16 years of my life have been happier than I could have imagined. As a transwoman I feel free to be myself, the express myself and to enjoy lifes pleasures. I could never do that impersonating a man.

    • this is a beautiful piece. it's terrible how transgendered people get treated because of ignorance. hopefully this will give some of those people some insight.

    • I love anything joshuakatcher does. Let it be known that I live in a very intolerant town, with a very intolerant family. I try and accept any and everyone I meet however. It's hard doing things you think are moral, when your family and town disagree with you. I guess I could have kept my beliefs that people should be who they want to be under wraps...but my cousin whom I'm very close with came out of the closet as being a lesbian. This forced me into the spotlight...because I was the only one who supported her. Watching these films just reassure me that people are people...and should be treated as such...

    • A great insight. I think everyone should see this...it would change how people should view everyone, no matter who you are.

    • Excellent insight. People should live and let live and stop minding other lives as if it was their own. God only clear mes in the bible was "Love thy neighbor as you would love Thyself." With these ranting, foaming at the mouth, jesus pimps its no wonder people are turned off of religion

    • This is a great piece! A friend of mine from college made the switch in this direction, and I dunno, it always just made sense to me -- I have to say not only was I not shocked at all, but it seemed very right on all levels. Thanks for this piece, because it's reminded me to drop him a line, and see what's been going on.

    • IMHO what needs to be applauded here are:
      content about youth, gender, sexuality and NYC that goes deeper than celebration or sensation. This glimpse is from the ground, so to speak. More projects like this should be encouraged. It goes without saying that it is a well-produced piece right down to the music used to underscore dramatic moments.
