Ashura

sgfelsen
From the rooftops of Lahore, Pakistan seems peaceful and at rest. But below, in the streets, it's a different story. It's the holy month of Muharram, and sectarian violence between Sunni and Shiite muslims is raging. The previous day, fifteen were killed in a suicide attack against Shias in a crowded marketplace in Peshawar. The day before that, a Sunni suicide bomber rushed into a Shia-owned hotel in Islamabad, killing himself and a security guard. Many believe the sectarian violence in Iraq is fueling the violence here. Public officials have warned Shiites to limit their activity today, on Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram and the holiest day of their year-- and the embassy has warned Americans to stay away from proceedings in the old city.

Through a friend, we are given unfettered access and get a chance to witness a spectacle that few westerners get to see up close.

    • Most all of us here on earth,in one way or another believe that God has created all of man kind, and the worlds wonders. What has become apparent to me, is that God will surley be the cause of the end.

    • It is apparent that a great deal of healing is needed in this area of the world. Our war will just further ignite the agony these people inflict on themselves.

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy that they will live in turmoil and war until they can find forgiveness and peace in their own hearts, and stop the cycle of violence that is rampant throughout this part of the world.

    • thanks for posting this. however, it runs short of how violent is the day of ashura in shia islam. Islam is a 7th century barbaric cult....the assassination of muhammad's grandson is only more proof of how barbaric the islamic mindset is.

blaming "sectarian violence in iraq" is only a poor excuse for the current violence between shia and sunni's.....for 1300 years they've been slaughtering each other calling each other the kufaars (disbelievers). you even state so yourself in the narration by indicating where the split started (husseins murder).

    • This was amazingly shot. I appreciated the depth of this with the actions of every angle. I admire your work and appreciate your voice. I am trying to speak for those who cannot speak and am curious if you could give me feedback, suggestions, and input to my recent re-upload of The Voice of the Murmurs. I would be quite grateful for input and suppor that you have. Thank you for helping me speak for those who cannot. Danielmklopp~

    • GL without a moment's hesitation. this piece has tv written all over it. especially liked the narration, very simple and informative. was thinking what could be done about the darkness at the end of the piece. you obviously couldn't do that much about it, wonder if you could have wrapped it up by staying longer on the shot of the moon and just leave the mourning cries playing with that in the backdrop. but that certainly is nitpicking. we usually only hear about the political conflict - this was very informative on the shiite-sunni religious divide. excellent story choice and incredible access. eleni

    • I have no idea why the Current staff is leaving this spectacular footage to work its way up the leader board. Anybody want to say this pod doesn't deserve to air? I didn't think so. GL from me -- fast-track this sucka.

    • Another good piece, You capture some powerful images with this pod, and keep it short and to the point. Great job.

This is the kind of thing that you'd NEVER see on BIG MEDIA in North America, GL for sure. THIS should be plucked from the list, straight to TV.

Please click on my head and give me your opinion on my pod "small town climate change" Please make a comment and take part in the discussion.

      Thanks
