Pets are often in danger, too.
Some women refuse to leave violent relationships to not only try and protect children, but pets as well. Because of this, the Women's Crisis Center in Victoria is adding a pet shelter to its new building plans.
"It's a heartbreaking fact that in years past, we have had victims of domestic violence refuse to seek shelter because we were not able to accommodate their pets," said Jo Janssen, director of development at Mid-Coast Family Services that operates the women's shelter.
"Many of those who have left pets behind have told horror stories of animal abuse and death. This is terribly traumatic for these victims and leaves horrible scars, especially on the children," Janssen said.
The Women's Crisis Center has formed a partnership with the American Humane Association to take part in the pets and women's shelter program (PAWS).

I had been wondering about the Chris Brown story. Thank you shatteredmen and MotherForTruth for pointing out this article.

There are over two thousand shelters for women in the United States and many from my understanding accept pets. There are now laws being set into place to protect pets but there is still no real law to protect half the victims of domestic abuse as we see from the post by Mother for Truth below. The Violence Against Women Act only protects women and many state attorney generals admit that they will not prosecute women for domestic abuse. WE have seen this in many new stories lately such as Chris Brown. We do not hear that he was attacked first and he only hit back when he got tired of being battered and I do wonder of his silence was part of the deal to keep him from a prison term.

I love the idea of allowing the pets to come to the shelter with the abused. A separation of a pet and it's owner can be traumatic for both. However, why are there no shelters for men? What about men and their dogs? Salvation Army, in most towns, is no place for a man whose only issue is being the victim of abuse.

Why there are no shelters for men who are victims of domestic violence?
Indiana State University School of Law Professor Linda Kelly wrote an excellent law review article on the topic, in which she shows that “over the past 25 years, leading sociologists have repeatedly found that men and women commit domestic violence at similar rates” and documents the historical and ideological cover-up of female violence. Kelly, Linda, "Disabusing the Definition of Domestic Abuse; How Women Batter Men and the Role of the Feminist State," 30 Fl. St. Law Review 791 (2003).
