RIP GeoCities
This is a sad day for Web 1.09. GeoCities, the once ubiquitous web host, is shutting its doors for good. Webcomic xkcd paid tribute to GeoCities' legacy today. There is also a site dedicated to preserving the memory of GeoCities, GeoCiti.es.GeoCities was a great place for someone who had no idea how to make web pages.
In college I started a small business, I knew I needed a webpage, but I couldn't afford a developer. So I embarked on creating it myself.
Not only could I tell people our mission statement, I could have a picture of Hello Kitty's friend Pochacco. I could let people know our location, and I could tell them what the weather was like in Zagreb. C'est incroyable!
It's the end of an era, but I think it's very important to preserve our internet past.
