Hamas Shifts From Rockets to Public Relations - NYTimes.com

Hamas has been cast as a terrorist organization by some people, and to others, Hamas is merely fighting for their peoples rights by defending themselves from blockades, kidnappings, invasions as well as land being taken, crops destroyed and their economic and social infrastructure methodically being destroyed.

Some months ago, before and during the recent bloody Israeli incursion, I had been in contact with government and United Nations representatives to get aid to the most affected areas of Gaza thru donations from citizens of the world to these organizations and be earmarked for Gaza. Mostly foods for infants and children who were being affected the most. This brought me in contact with many Human rights people, journalists, UNRWA /UN employees as well as Red Cross and several other approved organizations who were in direct contact with the people in need. When I had the opportunity to talk to some of them, I mentioned that peace is not achieved thru violence and that to their benefit, a good PR campaign (to replace the rockets) to show the world who and what and why they are, should be implemented. Look at what it does for other countries-including Israel. I hope my advice of non-violence was the seed, look of what Gandhi achieved with non-violence in the face of violence!

Here's the story and I do hope this 'change' is indelible and will sustain, that the oppression that has been imposed on these mostly innocent people is showed to more of the world. The last year, especially after the latest bloodshed, the world began to wake up. Now, will Israel wake up and learn to live with their neighbors?

GAZA — Seven months after Israel started a fierce three-week military campaign here to stop rockets from being fired on its southern communities, Hamas has suspended its use of rockets and shifted focus to winning support at home and abroad through cultural initiatives and public relations.

The aim is to build what leaders here call a “culture of resistance,” the topic of a recent two-day conference. In recent days, a play has been staged, a movie premiered, an art exhibit mounted, a book of poems published and a television series begun, most of it state-sponsored and all focused on the plight of Palestinians in Gaza. There are plans for a documentary competition.

“Armed resistance is still important and legitimate, but we have a new emphasis on cultural resistance,” noted Ayman Taha, a Hamas leader and former fighter. “The current situation required a stoppage of rockets. After the war, the fighters needed a break and the people needed a break.”

Mr. Taha and others say that the military has replaced field commanders and restructured itself as it learns lessons from the war. The decision to suspend the use of the short-range Qassam rockets that for years have flown into Israel, often dozens a day, has been partly the result of popular pressure. Increasingly, people here are questioning the value of the rockets, not because they hit civilians but because they are seen as relatively ineffective.

“What did the rockets do for us? Nothing,” Mona Abdelaziz, a 36-year-old lawyer, said in a typical street interview here.

How long Hamas will hold its fire and whether it will obtain longer-range missiles — which it says it is seeking — remain unclear. But the shift in policy is evident. In June, a total of two rockets were fired from Gaza, according to the Israeli military, one of the lowest monthly tallies since the firing began in 2002.

Early in the morning of Friday, April 9, 1948, commandos of the Irgun, headed by Menachem Begin, and the Stern Gang attacked Deir Yassin, a village with about 750 Palestinian residents. It was several weeks before the end of the British Mandate. The village lay outside of the area that the United Nations recommended be included in a future Jewish State. Deir Yassin had a peaceful reputation and was even said by a Jewish newspaper to have driven out some Arab militants. But it was located on high ground in the corridor between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem and one plan, kept secret until years afterwards, called for it to be destroyed and the residents evacuated to make way for a small airfield that would supply the beleaguered Jewish residents of Jerusalem.

By noon over 100 people, half of them women and children, had been systematically murdered. Four commandos died at the hands of resisting Palestinians using old Mausers and muskets. Twenty-five male villagers were loaded into trucks, paraded through the Zakhron Yosef quarter in Jerusalem, and then taken to a stone quarry along the road between Givat Shaul and Deir Yassin and shot to death. The remaining residents were driven to Arab East Jerusalem.

That evening the Irgunists and the Sternists escorted a party of foreign correspondents to a house at Givat Shaul, a nearby Jewish settlement founded in 1906. Over tea and cookies they amplified the details of the operation and justified it, saying Deir Yassin had become a concentration point for Arabs, including Syrians and Iraqis, planning to attack the western suburbs of Jerusalem. They said that 25 members of the Haganah militia had reinforced the attack and claimed that an Arabic-speaking Jew had warned the villagers over a loudspeaker from an armored car. This was duly reported in The New York Times on April 10.

A final body count of 254 was reported by The New York Times on April 13, a day after they were finally buried. By then the leaders of the Haganah had distanced themselves from having participated in the attack and issued a statement denouncing the dissidents of Irgun and the Stern Gang, just as they had after the attack on the King David Hotel in July 1946. A 1987 study undertaken by Birzeit University's Center for Research and Documentation of Palestinian Society found "the numbers of those killed does not exceed 120".

The Haganah leaders admitted that the massacre "disgraced the cause of Jewish fighters and dishonored Jewish arms and the Jewish flag." They played down the fact that their militia had reinforced the terrorists' attack, even though they did not participate in the barbarism and looting during the subsequent "mopping up" operations.

They also played down the fact that, in Begin's words, "Deir Yassin was captured with the knowledge of the Haganah and with the approval of its commander" as a part of its "plan for establishing an airfield."

UN Quartet, European Union Call on Israel to Halt Evictions in Sheikh Jarrah

This afternoon (19 July 2009) in Sheikh Jarrah, East Jerusalem, nearly 60 Palestinian, Israeli, and International supporters turned out in solidarity with the Hanoun and Ghawi families, whose final eviction orders became effective at 12:00pm today.

In a show of unity at the highest levels, prominent figures such as the UN representative of the Quartet on the Middle East, the Consul General of current European Union President, Sweden, Nils Eliasson, and the chief representative of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Rafik al-Husseini, called on Israel to cease the demolition of Palestinian homes, and stressed their expectation that the eviction of this family will not occur in the future. The Vice President of the European Union Parliament, Luisa Morgantini, made clear the EU's stance on Jerusalem—that it should be a capital for two states, shared by two people. In a spin on US President Barack Obama's campaign slogan, which has become a source of inspiration for the Hanoun family and residents of Sheikh Jarrah, Morgantiui said "yes we can" stop the current Israeli policy of Palestinian home evictions and demolitions in East Jerusalem.

Dozens of supporters, wearing Hebrew stickers that read "I am Maher Hanoun, come and arrest me," displayed their solidarity with the Sheikh Jarrah father who faces imminent imprisonment by the local authorities. Maher Hanoun was given the following ultimatum by the courts: either abandon your home by this date, or face indefinite jail time and exorbitant fines of 50,000 NIS + $50,000. The Hanoun family (including a wife and three children), with the support of the international community, has chosen to defy the courts and remain in their home, in hopes that the Israeli government will somehow change its stance.

Although the arrest and forceful eviction did not take place this afternoon, the stress of their imminence weighs heavily on the Hanoun family. What a sick minded writer who can judge a women AND her murdered daughter who are both only sympathetic towards the Palestinians plight and who never uttered a bad word against individual Jews.

There’s something so deeply, deeply depressing about the attack against Cindy Corrie by J Weekly, the Bay Area’s Jewish newspaper. True, it’s just one of countless examples of the moral malaise that plagues the institutional Jewish world when it comes to Palestinians, but on this day, this day when I am fresh back from Gaza, from Hebron, from Silwan, it has gotten to me.

I’m not sure which is worse- the possibility that the J’s editorial writer actually believes the morally groundless drivel he or she is writing? Or the possibility that they know full well that the moral outrage that is the Israeli treatment of Gazans is an affront to all Jews and feeling people, but that they care more about keeping advertisers happy.

While acknowledging the right of the SF Jewish Film Festival to air the film Rachel, a documentary made by Jewish-Israeli filmaker Simone Bitto , the Bay Area’s Jewish magazine has condemned in an editorial the decision to invite Cindy Corrie. Cindy is the mother of the subject of the film, Rachel Corrie, who was killed by an Israeli Defense Forces bulldozer while protesting home demolitions in Gaza.

As a grieving mother, Cindy Corrie has our sympathies. No parent should ever have to bury a child. But as an echo chamber of her daughter’s repulsive opinions, this woman has no business attending and speaking at a Jewish event like the film festival.

We are all for free speech. We are all for scheduling controversial films. But Cindy Corrie’s appearance crosses a line. The Jewish Film Festival is under no obligation to offer a microphone to Israel-bashers.

Israel-bashers? Repulsive opinions? For free speech? Oh to have just one hour to take the J editors to Gaza to see for themselves that which the Corries have so rightfully denounced. I just returned from there, and yet again, I have never been so confronted with the fact of meaningless, cruel and vindictive suffering. This has nothing to do with Israel-bashing. In fact, if you care about Israel, and only Israel, you still will come down on the side of the Corries, for it’s nearly impossible to see a decent future for Israelis if the country continues to harm and radicalize Gazans through illegal blockades and incursions and war.

It seems like this government of Israel is one of the most criminal in the world. Not only are their leaders consistently being indicted like Olmert, but also, like I mentioned, the hard right Lieberman..

His connections with local and foreign businessmen are currently under police investigation. Lieberman allegedly received millions of shekels from various entrepreneurs while serving as member of Knesset; under Israeli law, MKs are not allowed to receive any payment beyond their salary. One claim is that Michael Cherney paid a company called Path to the East large amounts of money between the years 1999 and 2006, and that these sums were then allegedly passed on to Lieberman as a bribe. Other allegations concern a company called M.L.1, founded by Lieberman's daughter Michal when she was 21[76]. These allegations concern money transferred to M.L.1 from unknown sources outside Israel; the money was later allegedly used for paying salaries to Avigdor and Michal Lieberman.[77] Lieberman is also under investigation for receiving a bribe from Austrian-Jewish businessman Martin Schlaff. Police investigators will recommend that former prime minister Ehud Olmert be tried on charges of cronyism allegedly perpetrated during his term as minister of industry, trade and labor.

Chief police investigator Yoav Seglovitch announced Monday that there was enough evidence to charge Olmert over political appointments he made during his tenure as minister.

The police said in a statement they found "evidence of criminal acts of fraud and breach of trust".

A police source familiar with the case said earlier this year that Olmert had not been able to refute the majority of the suspicions against him throughout the investigation.

Attorney General Menachem Mazuz had previously decided to indict Olmert on the Rishon Tours double-billing affair, the Talansky "cash envelopes" case and the Investment Center affair.

Legal Consequences of Wall Construction in Occupied Palestine

West Bank, July 9, (Pal Telegraph) - it will be the 5th year anniversary of the International Court of Justice's Advisory Opinion regarding the illegality of the separation wall constructed on Palestinian lands by the occupying Israeli forces.

Unfortunately, the ICJ's ruling has been continuously ignored by the Israeli government and the international community even though the Advisory Opinion is clear in its denouncing of the separation wall, and it is clear in its call for Israel to dismantle the separation wall and cease all illegal occupying activities, including demolition of homes, confiscating of lands, and restricting the movement people in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Five years later, it is important to highlight the background and legality of the International Court of Justice and the correlating international laws and conventions. Included in this article are the exact five summary points found by the International Court of Justice. By summarizing the current situation, we can prove, in facts, how the Israeli government has continued its illegal activities against the Palestinian people, even after the clarity of the Advisory Opinion. The International Court of Justice is a critical, judicial arm of the United Nations[1]. The Court’s role is to settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States and to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by authorized United Nations organs and specialized agencies. The United Nations General Assembly and Security Council may request advisory opinions on “any legal question”.

The International Court of Justice is of critical importance because of the silence forced upon the Security Council by the veto power of the permanent members. The Security Council consists of five permanent members who are China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and ten non-permanent members. The Submissive USA and Israel

USA, July 21, (Pal Telegraph) - U.S. Vice President Joe Biden told ABC television the US could not "dictate to another sovereign nation what they can and cannot do." On ABC's current affairs programme This Week, host George Stephanopoulos asked Mr Biden whether the Israeli position was the right approach.

The vice-president replied, "Israel can determine for itself - it's a sovereign nation - what's in their interest and what they decide to do relative to Iran and anyone else." Perhaps to please Bibi Netanyahu, Biden added that this was the case, "whether we agree or not" with the Israeli view.

Making thoughtless statements like these utterly defies both logic and sensibility. Using the same logic, he could have said the same thing about Iran.

Why doesn't he say "Iran can determine for itself - it's a sovereign nation - what's in their interest and what they decide to do relative to Israel and anyone else?" With the same logic and lack of sensibility, Biden might have said, "Iran can develop nuclear weapons whether we agree or not with their view."

With this kind of senseless thinking, it's a wonder that Biden ever managed to hold the leading democratic position on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, except that he is a self-declared Zionist with a 36-year Senate record of pro-Israel leadership.
While in his non-interference state of mind, Biden recently questioned the legitimacy of Ahmadinejad's victory in Iran's presidential elections. He commented that officials "just don't know enough" about how they were conducted.

What if they were conducted like elections in other countries that have clearly been rigged but have gone unnoticed by Biden? This is a perfect demonstration of America's foreign policy hypocrisy.

There's also the insensibility of maintaining double standards about international issues. "The president will not allow Iran to go nuclear," says Biden.

About North Korea's tests of long-range missiles, Biden says, "If the country is proliferating nuclear weapons or missiles, then it is a serious danger and a threat to the world..."

With North Korea, who withdrew from the non-proliferation treaty, it's a question of how quickly the missiles and nuclear weapons are being developed. Iran, on the other hand, remains a signatory to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty, which seeks to control the spread of nuclear weapons. Iran has made it clear that they want only to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
