Thirtysomethings having riskier sex than teens

According to a new research study, roughly 65% of people in their 30s and 40s don't use a condom when having sexy time with a new partner. Whoops.
'Those aged between 35 and 44 are twice as likely to have unprotected sex with a new lover than 16 to 19-year-olds'

What makes it slightly more horrific for me is that they are now planning an 'urgent drive' to promote safe sex to the more mature members of society, which is great, but think of all the young kids who are gonna be scarred by their mums or dads getting a pamphlet though the door warning of the dangers of unprotected sex...

The chief executive of the sexual health charity FPA said: "Thirtysomethings may see sexual health as a young person's concern and so do not always think about using condoms."

As my Mum told me, always wear your raincoat when playing in the rain. I guess that stands true no matter what age you are...

    • Hah! And these are probably the adults that grumble on and on about how teenagers think they're invincible and don't take precautions...way to take your own advice.

    • This is true...that's probably why someone came up with the phrase "dirty 30" For some reason (from my experience, and friends I know) heads in their 30's can be quite naughty! ;)

    • Note to self:

Good excuse not to have "sexy time" with girls over 30.

Perhaps it is just wiser to choose one's partners with a bit more restraint and caution in the first place.

If you can't trust someone not to give you an STD, then you probably shouldn't be having sex with them anyway.

    • This actually makes NO sense to me....I'm in this age range, and I remember when AIDS was scaring the hell out of everyone, and the safe sex campaign. When did my generation get so stupid and complacent as to think it can't happen to them? And it's not just HIV, it's herpes, HPV - all kinds of nasty incurable stuff...Geez, people, it's physiology - not mind over matter here. If you sneeze around someone without covering your mouth, you could give them a cold, right? Yeah, take that anyway you want. Enough said. Let's be careful out there.

I really don't know what it is. I know guys in their 30s that just really prefer not to. Thankfully I have only been acquainted with ones who will use one whether they like it or not. But its a scary world out there for the single and sexually active.

    • The media loves to pull out the teenage STI/ pregnancy tactic whenever they can [no pun intended], but it looks like they'll have to start doing the same for the 30-somethings.

    • How about this: we install condom vending machines on the streets in all cities/towns. One quarter = one condom = safe sex. Everyone wins, seriously how many people have found themselves in need and there wasn't anything around? well except the gas station....

    • Be careful. People like to have sex without a condom. But there's a problem there...there are some people that would purposely have sex without a condom and go to a site where they can get crabs and be vindictive enough to give themselves crabs just to give them to you.

Actually....a condom wouldn't protect you from that.

I laugh when people use sex to exact revenge...it's indulging people's urges....preying on them and using their wants against them. It's ingenious.

    • It's all about the mid-life crisis, man. Havin' the kind of wild, crazy sex you didn't think to have when you were a teenager before you get old and have to have old people sex. I can see this happening.

    • That's because once you turn 30 you become super sexy. Meaning you can have sex with anyone and suffer zero consequences. Everyone knows that. That's why they do it.

    • I'm not in either of these age brackets, teen or 30-40 years old but, I would like to bring up the fact that teenagers don't want children say, as much as a 30-40 year old would. Maybe this has something to do with condom wearing, or lack of, as well?

    • This makes sense considering that teens these days have a lot more information than people who were teens 20 years ago about the risks as well as the frightening statistics related to disease and death from sexually transmitted diseases.

    • I think the 42+ bracket are using the lack of risk of pregnancy to push these numbers up. Plus it's probably less embarrassing heading to a VD clinic when you're older?Whatever, it's filthy: use protection!

    • Damnit Cougars! If you want our young men then at least keep them clean!

everyone just go buy condoms, it's a step in the right direction at least, not saying you'll even need them, just have em around i guess. . .

Yea - thats for a number of reasons though... Protection being one of them - They assume because of their age there is no real reason to use it. They won't get pregnant and VD wasn't AS big of a deal for some of them as it has become for us.

The other reason though is related to what I just stated. Because VD wasn't as prominently spoken about as it is in our times, and because many seniors did not check for said diseases like we do, they are discovering them NOW. Such as HPV. It is something that was never really checked for before so its starting to show in a lot of much older women because we are now screening for it regularly.

And some just don't care. My friend did her Obg/Gyn rotation and saw a lot of older women who were kind of like - whatever - about certain VDs. Sad

    • I'm 34 and I've been getting the "but I told you I can't have kids?; I mean, you can wear a condom if you think YOU might have something" excuse for a few years now. Sorry, I test clean. I'm not wearing because of something I might have.
