A British Medical Journal study found smokers are twice as likely to quit if their doctor tells them how old their lungs are.

We teamed up with the British Lung Foundation to test six volunteers using a spirometry test, which measures how much air you can expel from your lungs in the first second of breathing out.

Lung age is then calculated using a mathematical formula that compares the readings to those of healthy non-smokers.

    • I wonder what is the average rate that people quit smoking after a doctor asks them? If the proof comes from those 6 people, then i say BULLSHIT. This is a nice idea and i bet it will coerce many and I support it just not the evidence at hand.

    • we're all actively dying anyways. i don't like people telling smokers how to live their lives. sure, if anyone lights up next to me eating my meal, i'll let them know it's a problem, but in reality, let them live as they wish. that's just my opinion.

    • In the mail today I received a packet from USA Gold encouraging me to smoke the company's cigarettes. I have never smoked a day in my life. I found this so pathetic.

    • lung tissue regenerates until you hit about the age of 25. so as long as you quit before then, you'll be good for old age

    • I think there should be a lot less pressure on getting people to quit and a lot more on the companies themselves.

They need to stop adding so many horrible and addictive chemicals to their product.

Smoking is a cultural practice that has it's place.

It has just been perverted into something weird

    • Ohhh good reverse psychology here. Watching my grandfather slowly die from emphysema was enough to keep me from smoking, but maybe something like this would help my friend shake the habit while she's young. (She's 20) They need to bring this over to the States!

I think there are no such rules or ideas to prevent people for smoking. The only way is that, people need to be careful by themselves by seeing the horrifying result of smoking.

    • If I had to look at images like the above I would puke and I don't smoke and don't want to, but those images are necessary. I don't need to see pictures of murder victims to know I don't want to murder. Thanks. ha.

I use to have to do a breathing thing for a class I taught kids and my lungs are pretty good, I think. Nothing like a diver but good for what age I am as well as never having smoked.

    • Smokers are twice as more likely to quit just if they're told their lung age??!!! There's been so much money put into hard hitting adverts and NHS help, but no, just tell them their lung age.

    • I wonder if that's a more effective deterrent than these horrifying images that are going to be printed on ciggie packs in the UK from now on...
