The Pill without a prescription

Image

If you live in Lambeth or Southwark in London, you'll be able to get the Pill without a prescription next year. A pilot where the contraceptive can be sold from chemists has been given the go ahead. If it's successful it will be rolled out around the country. It's to try to combat the rise in teenage pregnancies.

"Although the teenage pregnancy rate in Britain is falling in many areas, it remains the highest in Western Europe."

Wonder if this will work?

    • Everybody should have their own life. It is unique and unpredictable. I can't judge anybody by beimg or not being a virgin on the wedding night. Everything is up to you! Just do not judge not just other people, but yourself too!

    • Why do you judge your self by what some other individual has done? How about the dozens of other girls you must know that were not virgins? If you are religious and feel repentant then God will forgive you. If you are not religious then what do you care what they did each person must decide for themselves what is right for them. You are no more evil or good than any other generation of humans. If these girls you speak of are truly good they would not want you to think less of your self by comparing their actions with yours.

    • People do have self control. I know several women who were virgins on their wedding night.

I feel like a slut next to them

    • What planet are you on?? We never had self control! A researcher based his college thesis on premarital sex in the era after the American civil war. He determined that the majority of couples had sex prior to marriage. Every generation claims to the generation after how moral and upright they were compared to them. Nothing but rationalization. Just because you showed a lick of common sense doesnt mean that the was the norm.

    • Things have changed so much since I was a teen. I did not have sex until I was 21 and it was protected sex. What ever happened to self control?

    • some girls might want it to just make their monthly cycle more consistent. however it is probably used more often for the latter.

    • i'd say that it should be available without a prescription. and it should be free. ideally.
the only thing i worry about is that people - aka, young women - will not get the proper education about birth control, its proper use and sexual health in general.

      but i can dream....

    • when I worked in a free clinic in LA/ the Valley part, we found for every dollar spent on pregnancy prevention 2 dollars were saved in welfare benefits.

While no figures were available, and I am not aware of any studies done, I will bet my Betsy Johnson purse that abuse numbers dropped too.

Rather than the regular pill, several of which have been available generically for years, a longer lasting preventative might make this more effective.

    • I'm not convinced. surely a teenager is more likely to want to get the Pill free than have to buy it every month, even if they don't need to get a prescription. Also, a doctor can advise the right kind of pill to suit each individual's needs - isn't this just going to put more people off the Pill from more stories of its bad effects or ineffectiveness?

    • The key to making this work is education. Girls need to be given proper advice both in the form of continued sex education at schools, at home, as well as from the chemists selling the pills.

    • Sold? The pill should be free; Will getting it free from the doctor's become harder because there's commercial gain at the chemist? If you've been on the pill for years, it is a pain in the ass going back to the doctors though..

    • I used to work in pharmacy and I can tell you, this just won't work. All we're going to see is more teenagers on Jeremy Kyle saying that their Pill failed and they got pregnant because they didn't take it properly. The Pill should only be prescribed by a Doctor and it is only effective when taken a regular intervals.

    • Good point about the possible rise in STI's

The cynical side of me wonders how much of this is a financial thing as well - won't more money be made if the pills are sold rather than given out free in Family Planning Clinics?

Interesting clip from Purplefox - thanks for that.

    • AnnieMole:

AnnieMole, most of the pills are alread available in generic forms, so profit ratio will be minimized.

Also, when I worked for a free clinic in LA 25 ys, we found that for every dollar spent in prevention, two dollars were saved in welfare benefits. I am not aware if any studies were done on the abuse numbers, but I will bet you my Betsy Johnson purse that they dropped!

    • I don't think it'll work, surely getting drunk at a party and not being 'safe' is a bigger culprit than girls who don't want to go to get a prescription for the pills.

Still, I don't think it can do any harm to try, unless kids start thinking because a girl's on the pill they don't have to bag it, then we might see a rise in STIs.

Purplefox clipped a cool story yesterday about how the contraceptive pill could be partly responsible for arise in marital breakups in the West. Click the link to find out more...
